This annual conference, MEMORIALS, MOVEMENTS AND MEANINGS brings together educators, students, practitioners, and community leaders in both Latin American Studies and Ethnic Studies, as well as those who work in various academic fields and in community-based organizations to bridge these intersecting and interconnected yet historically separate(d) & divergent areas of study and praxis in the Southern California region.
In 2021, Hispanic Outlook on Education named CSUN as second in the nation to award Bachelor's degrees to students of Latin American heritage as well as second in the nation in offering degrees in ethnic, cultural, gender studies degrees. CSUN being a Hispanic Serving Institution and one of the most diverse campuses in the United States, it's the perfect venue for this conference.
As the Latina/o/x, Central American and Chicana/o/x populations of various racial/ethnic heritages continue to grow exponentially across socio-politically constructed national borders and impact our communities, this conference will engage in rigorous dialogue and assemble scholars, teachers, community leaders, community activists and students. Some of the panel and round table topics will be: "Diverse Identity/ies," "Continuing Post-war Challenges in Latin America, " "Journalism and Freedom of Expression in Latin America," "New Age Dictatorships" and "Contemporary Solidarity Movements."
Sponsored by: College of Humanities - CSUN, Academic Programming Fund - CSUN, American Indian Studies Program, Central American and Transborder Studies Department, UCLA, CSULA
