The Department of Central American and Transborder Studies presents a Reading & Discussion with author Edgar Gomez.
Fuera Machismo! "Like many people who grew up in Latino communities, I came of age in a machista culture that elevated masculinity and shunned women, queer folks, and femininity. I didn't begin to question machismo until I discovered my queerness and realized that the rewards offered to men who subscribed to toxic masculinity didn't serve me. Even so, it took years for me to rid myself of the machismo ingrained in me from birth. This talk will unpack the history of machismo, the racist stereotypes associated with it that have been used to marginalize Latinx folk, and ultimately discuss why ending machismo is a project all men, queer or not, should be invested in."
Sponsored by the Department of Central American and Transborder Studies.
