University Counseling Services Presents Q.P.R. Suicide Prevention Training: Question, Persuade, Refer | October 9

Join University Counseling Services for Q.P.R(Question, Persuade, and Refer), a two hour training designed to help you help someone who may be considering suicide. This training is facilitated by University Counseling Services.

Faculty and staff are interacting with more students expressing symptoms of mental health concerns (e.g., anxiety, stress, depression, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts, etc.). This training helps prepare someone who is in the position to recognize someone who may be in crisis. The training is focused on signs of distress and crises, and "provides innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training."

University Counseling Services has received extremely positive feedback from the faculty and staff on campus who have participated in this training. They report feeling more knowledgeable and better equipped to serve in a gate-keeping role -- how to recognize a student in distress, how to talk with them about their concerns, how to offer hope, and how to refer that student to get the help they may need.

Tuesday, October 9, 2018 - 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Location: Human Resources Training Room, Oviatt Library 16, Garden Level
Facilitated by: Anne Eipe, University Counseling Services

Affordable Learning $uccess: Make Your Space Possible | October 22

2 in 5 CSUN students reported some level of food insecurity. The cost of a textbook, even if it seems low, may mean the difference between succeeding at CSUN and dropping out. At the event, you will be able to:

    • Meet some of the faculty who have incorporated low to zero cost materials into their courses without compromising quality!
    • Learn why this initiative is critical for the success of our students through an interactive panel.
    • Find out about grant opportunities to join the AL$ initiative.

Sustainability Knowledge Survey & Sustainability Campus-Wide Events

The Institute for Sustainability is studying how our campus community thinks about sustainability, and how effective our efforts have been in raising awareness. We’re requesting your help by completing the survey. The results will be used for internal benchmarking and reporting to public rating systems such as the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System. Please help out by taking a few minutes to answer some brief questions. The survey takes 5-10 minutes to complete, and at the end you have the option of entering a drawing to win one of five $20 Matador Money Gift Cards. Please complete the survey by Friday, October 19.

Thank you so much for your participation. Your responses are very important to us!

 Clean Air Day

Wednesday, October 3

California Clean Air Day is Wednesday, October 3, 2018, and we would like to encourage you to participate by taking actions that reduce our contributions to air pollution. Clean Air Day is a multifaceted statewide program designed by the Coalition for Clean Air, which is built on the idea that shared experiences unite people to action to improve our community health. Below are some of the many ways you can participate in this statewide initiative.

Conserve Energy: Because most of our energy comes from burning fossil fuels, conserving energy is one way to reduce air pollution. Faculty who teach in rooms with sufficient natural lighting can switch off the lights to conserve energy. Department offices can turn off lights and enjoy the natural daylight and turn off lights when rooms aren’t occupied. Make sure to power down devices when not in use. Find your own creative ways to conserve energy!

Skip the Traffic: Transportation accounts for more than 41% of the emissions in California. If you live within walking or biking distance of campus, burn calories, not oil. Now’s your chance to try out one of those cool LimeBikes if you haven’t already! If four wheels are necessary, try carpooling with a colleague. CSUN offers a ride-sharing program, Zimride, to help our campus community find carpoolers who live nearby. You can also take the train or bus, and students can purchase a discounted Metro U-Passes online or at the AS Ticket Office at the USU.

High Impact, Low Waste: Tips and Tricks for Greening Your Events and Meetings

Friday, October 12
11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Oviatt 16

Whether you’re charged with planning a lunch meeting for a few or planning a celebration for hundreds, we’ll show you how you can embed sustainability into your event to make it a success for attendees and the environment!

Integrating sustainable practices into your meeting and event planning supports the campus priority of sustainability and helps you stretch your department dollars. Join campus sustainability champions and event planners to learn how to deliver a positive experience while subtly changing practices and behaviors to save precious resources.  We’ll save time to share “best practices” that you and your colleagues already incorporate into your planning.

How to Host an Eco-Friendly Par-tay

Monday, October 15
12:30 p.m - 1:15 p.m
USU Lakeview Terrace Room (East Conference Center)

We’ve all been there: The party is over and the cleanup begins. Trash cans are overflowing with plastic cups and bits of pizza crust. It doesn’t have to be this way. Whether you’re hosting a fancy birthday party or having some friends over for the Superbowl, a night of fun doesn’t have to mean trashing the planet. Come learn how to host an eco-friendly party without breaking the bank. We’ll talk about zero-waste, sourcing materials, decoration ideas, and party favors that keep people looking forward to more. Participants will receive a party pack to take home. Space and goodies are limited so make sure to RSVP at sustainability@csun.edu!

Sustainability Day

Wednesday, October 24
9:00 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.
University Student Union, Northridge Center

This year’s Sustainability Day theme will be ‘Fueling the Future of Sustainable Transportation’ with guest speakers and CSUN Sustainability Leaders who will share their expertise about energy and transportation at CSUN and in our community. Thanks to our partnership with LA Cleantech Incubator (LACI), we will have a unique opportunity to highlight Successful Strategies for Addressing Energy and Transportation Issues in Disadvantaged Communities in Los Angeles. Sessions will focus on issues pertaining to sustainable transportation, urban planning, and policy. We’ll share problems—and solutions!

We’re especially pleased to announce that Aura Vasquez will be our guest speaker at 9:30 a.m. Aura is one of five commissioners on the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). When Mayor Eric Garcetti appointed her to the Board in 2017, she became the youngest Commissioner in the city. Her goal is to establish policies that make our municipal utility agency more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable. Aura is a leader, advocate, and activist for environmental and social justice issues with more than 10 years of experience in New York, Washington D.C, and California. A native of Colombia, Aura brings her experiences as a Latina immigrant, a woman of color, and successful environmental leader to many issues concerning frontline communities.

If you have any questions please contact the IT Help Center.

Influenza (Flu) Shots Available by Appointment at Klotz Student Health Center
