When we talk about gratitude or mindfulness, oftentimes we use the word “practicing” to describe the importance of intention, as opposed to the outcome. Taking time to acknowledge the good around us doesn’t always come naturally.
By practicing gratitude, we can step back from our workday and look at our lives from a fresh perspective. It’s not meant to fix negative emotions or difficult experiences. Instead, gratitude is a useful lens that can help us tap into what’s going right, even when it feels difficult.

1. Decorations. Reuse instead of buying new materials for decorations and gather supplies for DIY projects throughout the year. For example:

3. Parties. Reduce waste by avoiding plastic bottles, disposable cups, plates, and cutlery. Use regular tableware or buy compostable paper/palm leaf plates. If plastic cups can't be avoided, use a marker to identify cups so people can keep track of theirs.
4. Jack-o-lanterns. Don't throw away the insides of your pumpkin, instead toast the seeds to enjoy on their own or in dishes, and use pumpkin flesh in baked goods. Yum!
5. Transportation.
6. Compost and Recycle. Consider composting all organic matter such as party food and/or pumpkins. Just throw them into the green bin. Many local agencies also accept pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns to compost them, consider searching online for those.
7. Reuse as much as you can from year to year!
Our presenter, Gigi McGuire, Assistant Director of Student Outreach and Recruitment at CSUN, has extensive knowledge of the CSU admission policies and procedures, and aims to share their knowledge with staff and faculty interested in helping their child get to college. There is a lot of information out there - we'll provide critical and timely information, dispel myths, and ensure you are equipped to help your child research, apply and successfully transition into the college of their choice.

About Our From Here to Career Program:
Through the program, you will learn how to support your student employees while they explore and practice key concepts and strategies that will set them on a path toward career success. During the 9-month program, student assistants will engage in an online course, meet with peer mentors, and learn from CSUN alumni who were student assistants. The program begins in September 2023 and ends in May 2024. It helps keep your student assistant engaged and provides them with professional development.
From Here to Career is based on the National Association of Colleges and Employers Career Readiness Competencies which have been identified to help employees be successful in the world of work.

Your feedback is critical to get an accurate carbon footprint measure and help improve the air quality through practical and innovative strategies. Once we have completed the commute survey as a campus, this will produce a formula-based metric that is required by the Southern California Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD). An All-Rec Volleyball League will be offered by Intramural Sports at the Student Recreation Center (SRC) during the winter break between 11/28/23 – 1/11/24. Games will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 5p-7p in the SRC. There will be no games during the campus closure, 12/25/23-1/1/24.
The league is open to all students, faculty, staff and alumni. Interested individuals can create a team and add players, or join as a Free Agent Fees for participants with current SRC memberships are free. Fees for participants eligible for a SRC membership will be $25 for the entire season.

The 2023-2024 Fall Semester well underway, the Department of Police Services (DPS) invites everyone to take a moment to think about your emergency preparedness. We can all proactively remain informed and prepared by reviewing the campus emergency procedures located at https://www.csun.edu/emergency/procedures. The webpage provides you with key information needed should critical incident situations occur. Be sure to review specific Student, Faculty, and Staff details.
CSUN provides these Emergency Procedures to increase preparedness for emergencies such as earthquakes, wildfires, and active shooter incidents. As an educational tool, CSUN has also created a video on how to respond to active shooter incidents https://www.csun.edu/police/activeshooter.
Ensure your emergency contact information is always up-to-date in the CSUN Portal. This is key to receiving emergency notifications via text, voicemail and email. Login to the CSUN Portal and within your Faculty and Staff profile, navigate to the HR menu, select Personal Information, then select Update Personal Information.
Follow the DPS Instagram and CSUN Twitter accounts, which will have Emergency Update Posts that are included on the CSUN Homepage during any active incidents. Please contact Nelson Cox, Emergency Manager as needed.
