CSUN Sergeant Andrew Higgins, Corporal Ismael Granados and (former CSUN) Officer Moises Mercado receive Lifesaving Medals for Helping Save the Lives of Two Gunshot Victims

In October 2021, the Police Communications Center at CSUN received a 911 call from an individual who had been shot close to campus. Higgins, Granados and Mercado responded to the scene where they observed two gunshot victims on the ground. After securing the scene, Higgins used his experience as a certified first-aid instructor to direct and assist Granados and Mercado, and the three of them assessed the victims to determine the extent of their injuries to update incoming patrol, fire and ambulance units. Both victims were shot in the upper leg and thigh areas, close to critical arteries, and required the use of tourniquets to stabilize their bleeding. Higgins, Mercado and Granados reassured the victims, keeping them alert and calm while they rendered lifesaving measures until personnel from the Los Angeles City Fire Department arrived and took over. Both victims were transported to the hospital and survived thanks to the quick actions of the three officers.

Officers were recognized at a ceremony held at Police Services on August 14, 2023.

University Library presents: An Evening with Dr. Ellen Ochoa | September 28

Thursday, September 28, 2023
4:00 - 5:30 p.m., PST
University Student Union - Grand Salon

Join us as we welcome Dr. Ochoa to CSUN, and enjoy an unforgettable evening with one of America’s trailblazers.

Ellen Ochoa has charted a dazzling and inspirational career path: from her early days as a researcher, to her four missions as an astronaut, to heading up NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Ochoa has seen first hand the importance of minorities in STEM, women in leadership positions, and the way innovative change management can push a team—an entire organization—forward.

Ellen Ochoa is a pioneer like no other. She made history as the first Latina to go to space, blazing a trail for other marginalized kids who dream of the stars. There were few minorities in leadership when she joined NASA—so she changed that, becoming the first Hispanic and second female director of the Johnson Space Center. Despite her many accomplishments, Ellen says the biggest role she’s played is in mentoring and advocating for the next generation: “astronauts, scholars, who will go on to accomplish more than we can imagine.” In her evocative talks, she draws from her wealth of experiences, both in space and on the ground, to empower audiences to break barriers and overcome adversity.

There will be two sessions on September 28, 2023:

  • 3:00-3:45 pm: for visiting students from local middle and high schools
  • 4:00-5:30pm: for the general CSUN community and guests

Saturday, September 30, will take a more traditional conference format with multiple sessions available each hour between 8-5pm, with breakfast and lunch included. Experts on topics related to “Collaboration and Academics” and “Collaboration and Behavior” as well as myriad related topics will be flying in from around the United States to be the presenters at the conference. Keynote presentations will be done by Dr. Melissa Jenkins (University of Mary Washington, VA) and Dr. Wendy Murawski (California State University, Northridge), as the authors of the text. In addition to our experts, we will be spotlighting local educators as they share with us their tips for engaging learners that have led them to be so successful!

Conference fees vary based on dates and early bird registration, which is available until September 1, 2023.
