Calm & HR Partnership | Identifying & Expressing Gratitude
When we talk about gratitude or mindfulness, oftentimes we use the word “practicing” to describe the importance of intention, as opposed to the outcome. Taking time to acknowledge the good around us doesn’t always come naturally.
By practicing gratitude, we can step back from our workday and look at our lives from a fresh perspective. It’s not meant to fix negative emotions or difficult experiences. Instead, gratitude is a useful lens that can help us tap into what’s going right, even when it feels difficult.
Calm, our mental health partner, has curated the following resources to kickstart your daily gratitude practice:
Gratitude Check-In
- Available only in the Calm mobile app, you can do a daily gratitude check-in where you can share three things you’re grateful for on that day.
Gratitude Body Scan for Sleep
- In this session with Jay Shetty, you’ll complete a full body scan exercise so you can drift off with a sense of gratitude and appreciation for your body after a long day.
7 Days of Gratitude
- In this 7-part series led by Tamara Levitt, you’ll learn various tactics that you can use—from magnifying abundance to sharpening your attention—to allow appreciation to flourish in your life again.
Check out the Calm app for more options that suit your daily needs. Haven't activated your free Calm Premium subscription yet? Visit the HR Benefits Calm website for information on how to activate your account.

Dig-Up Last Minute Green Halloween Tips in the Latest Institute for Sustainability Newsletter
Read the full October issue of CSUN Institute for Sustainability's The Footprint here.
1. Decorations. Reuse instead of buying new materials for decorations and gather supplies for DIY projects throughout the year. For example:
- Turn cardboard boxes into tombstones
- Collect dried plants and leaves for fall decorations
- Turn stockings into reusable spider-webbing
- Turn empty jars and bottles into black magic potions
- When buying new decorations, give preference to well-made items, so they can be reused for many seasons.
2. Costumes
- Keep old clothes that can be used as good pieces or parts of costumes, like worn t-shirts, black pants/shorts, etc.
- If necessary, shop at thrift shops and yard sales, instead of buying retail.
3. Parties. Reduce waste by avoiding plastic bottles, disposable cups, plates, and cutlery. Use regular tableware or buy compostable paper/palm leaf plates. If plastic cups can't be avoided, use a marker to identify cups so people can keep track of theirs.
4. Jack-o-lanterns. Don't throw away the insides of your pumpkin, instead toast the seeds to enjoy on their own or in dishes, and use pumpkin flesh in baked goods. Yum!
5. Transportation.
- Choose to walk around your neighborhood when trick-or-treating instead of driving to another destination. Get to know your neighbors, reduce carbon emissions, and help keep streets safe for other walkers.
- Carpool to a party with your friends.
6. Compost and Recycle. Consider composting all organic matter such as party food and/or pumpkins. Just throw them into the green bin. Many local agencies also accept pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns to compost them, consider searching online for those.
7. Reuse as much as you can from year to year!

CSUN is a nationally recognized leader in our commitment to environmental sustainability. Each year, as part of this commitment, we measure our carbon footprint against our previous benchmark. Your feedback is critical to get an accurate carbon footprint measure and help improve the air quality through practical and innovative strategies. In a hybrid in-person and virtual working environment, we have a unique opportunity to analyze how this has affected our campus’ carbon footprint goals.
Once we have completed the commute survey as a campus, this will produce a formula-based metric that is required by the Southern California Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD). Everyone’s response is an important part of this metric. Thank you for doing your part in maintaining a sustainable future for our campus.
