Being a Strategic Partner with the Campus Community

Committed to bringing the campus together as a community, the Office of Human Resources partnered with other CSUN departments on various efforts to support a growing learning environment.  These partnerships are evidenced through Human Resources' contributions to CSUN Weekly, the growing "Campus Updates" section of the monthly HR News publication, and by hosting such programs as the 2016-17 CSUN Shine from Within Cohort.

Professional and Personal Development Program

Human Resources took advantage of President Harrison's Welcome Address held in August at the Valley Performing Arts Center to share the Professional and Personal Development Programming calendar with the campus community.  President Harrison generously touted the program as part of the university's commitment to Employees for Success campus priority, and printed calendars of all programming for the academic year were distributed afterward.  HR continued to partner with faculty, staff, and departments throughout campus to improve its programming by increasing quality of workshops.  During the 2016-17 programming, there were 167 Workshops offered, with 84 in Fall 2016 and 83 in Spring 2017.

CSUN Weekly, "Focus on Faculty and Staff"

Human Resources continued its partnership with CSUN’s Marketing and Communications department to engage the campus community by promoting Professional and Personal Development Program workshops as well as opportunities throughout campus.  Encouraging employees to engage in university sponsored events, Human Resources provided weekly events for the “Focus on Faculty and Staff” section of CSUN Weekly. Throughout 2016-17, HR contributed information about 99 workshops, events, open houses, and other events of interest to the campus community; more than one-third of these opportunities were programs housed outside of Human Resources.

HR Monthly News

With the 2016-2017 Fiscal Year, HR News transitioned to a 12-month communication vehicle with the campus.  Distributed to current staff, faculty (including FERP) and auxiliary employees, HR News provide three separate channels through which to inform and engage the community: HR Updates, Campus Updates, and Professional and Personal Development Programming . Throughout 2016-17 fiscal year, HR presented 77 opportunities for the campus to engage in the Campus Updates section alone.

CSUN Shine From Within

2016-17 CSUN Shine From Within Cohort

Developed as part of the University’s priority to focus on employee success, the CSUN Shine from Within Program welcomed the third cohort of the program. Members of the cross-divisional development program learn core competencies, develop a sense of connection and community with other units across campus, broaden understanding and knowledge about the university and other divisions, in relation to campus planning priorities.  Members of the 2016-17 cohort included: Griselda Corona, Chicano/a Studies; Darnell Edwards, Student Outreach & Recruitment; Ryan Feyk-Miney, Institutional Research; Julie M. Gastelum, Foundation; Ping Jiang, Administrative Application Development; Michelle Kilmnick, Faculty Affairs; Charlene R Manzueta, Research & Graduate Studies; Jenny Novak, Police Services; Julie R. Pullen, The University Corporation; Stephen B. Reeves, Physical Plant Management; Matthew Soto, Student Housing & Conference Services; Vanessa Villavicencio, MDECOE, Dean's Office; Barrington D. Walker, Telecommunication Services; and Megan Zullo, Financial Services.

As the cohort’s capstone project, members conducted interviews and focus groups with students across campus about student satisfaction and success factors.  The group presented their findings to President Harrison and the Cabinet.

Supporting the Matador Spirit

To model the behaviors that Human Resources encourages among the community, HR strongly promotes an internal culture of supporting our campus partners.  As such, HR staff actively supported and participated in volunteer activities, programs, and events throughout campus.  From attending celebrations to participating in professional development opportunities, HR staff continue to actively be engaged partners with our campus community.
