The Trialby Franz KafkaThe book discussed for June 1 is "The Trial" by Franz Kafka. (This gathering was rescheduled from May 18th) Written in 1914 but not published until 1925, a year after Kafka’s death, The Trial is the terrifying tale of Josef K., a respectable bank officer who is suddenly and inexplicably arrested and must defend himself against a charge about which he can get no information. Whether read as an existential tale, a parable, or a prophecy of the excesses of modern bureaucracy wedded to the madness of totalitarianism, The Trial has resonated with chilling truth for generations of readers. | Tuesday7:00 - 8:00 p.m.June 1, 2021
Discussion Facilitated by: Elliott Maude Program Manager, Tseng College | |
It Can’t Happen Hereby Sinclair LewisIt Can't Happen Here was written in 1935, but you will be amazed at the parallels to the present day. Lewis was inspired to write it in the depths of the Great Depression, and by his journalist wife’s experience interviewing Hitler when she was a foreign correspondent in Berlin. It Can’t Happen Here is available at your library, as well as on Amazon and at Audible.com, and possibly at a used bookstore near you. Catherine recommends abe.com for used books by mail order, but pay attention to shipping timelines. The CSUN University Library has a few copies of this book that can be requested for home delivery, or starting March 3, 2021, for delivery to a library locker: | Tuesday7:00 - 8:00 p.m.March 23, 2021
