Health Administration Scholarship

ScholSoseh Melkonianar: Soseh Melkonian

Year Awarded: 2017  

Major: Health Administration

About Soseh: Soseh became interested in healthcare when she saw the sincere care her grandfather received while in a hospital. Family is very important to her, so when she heard that CSUN’s health programs had wonderful faculty and was close to home she knew the university would be a great fit. Soseh has been involved in the University Ambassadors program for more than three years, most recently serving as the vice president. During her time in as a University Ambassador, she has gained leadership skills that can help her reach her goals. She is committed to working with other healthcare professionals to provide quality care to every individual. Soseh would like to thank the Health Administration program for receiving this scholarship. When she was chosen, she felt overwhelmed that the professors, who had become mentors to her, believed in her. A light they had seen in her was a light she began to acknowledge in herself as well. Soseh would like to pursue a master’s degree in management and leadership. She hopes to gain additional skills that will enable her to excel in the healthcare sector.

 

ScholAlejandra Mirandaar: Alejandra Miranda

Major: Health Administration

About Alejandra: Alejandra was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. She is Mexican-American and she will be the first individual in her family to graduate from a four-year university; she hopes to serve as a role model to her younger family members. Her current position at an orthodontic laboratory brought her to the realization that health administration is the right major and profession for her. Serving as the treasurer for the Health Administration Student Association (HASA) has allowed her to expand on the vital skills of communication, leadership and project management. Eventually, she would like to pursue a master’s degree in health administration and obtain a position as a quality improvement director. Her dream is to hold an executive position at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles or to open her own clinic. Alejandra is grateful to receive this scholarship and hopes she can continue to make the faculty, her family and friends proud of her academic achievements.

About the Scholarship: The Health Administration Scholarship Program was initiated through a generous donation from alumnus, Ronald “Ron” Sorensen, and further supported by alumna, Dori Holnagel. The scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students who are majoring in health administration and have successfully completed the first two introductory courses. Recipients are selected based on evidence of financial need, being among the first in their family to attend college, and have a proven commitment to the community.

Holly Hunt Health Education Scholarship

Scholar: Danielle Co

Year Awarded: 2017  

Major: Public Health  

About Danielle: Danielle grew up in Southern California, in a house with a mix of American and Filipino cultures. Her upbringing and her mother’s background in nursing taught her to approach people with understanding and care. Danielle is a member of CSUN’s Gerontology Society and volunteers with the organization, Asians and Pacific Islanders with Disabilities of California, an organization dedicated to helping those with physical, mental and developmental disabilities. She hopes to continue to better herself and to give back to the community that made her the person she is today. She aspires to help reconcile her own and other’s knowledge of cultural health myths with evidence based health knowledge. Danielle would like to give her greatest thanks for the Hunt family for this scholarship and for helping her in furthering her academic efforts. She strives to accomplish great things in her future and be a student and individual that will continue to honor Holly’s memory.

 

Scholar: Belinda Martinez

Year Awarded: 2017

Major: Public Health

About Belinda: Belinda is a child of immigrant parents and found herself serving as a liaison between her parents and their healthcare provider. This led her to pursue a degree in public health to help individuals combat the barriers they face when accessing healthcare. She is currently part of Peer Health Exchange where she has taught health curriculum to more than 1,000 students in 15 Title 1 schools in San Fernando Valley. Belinda hopes to one day build a coalition in her community in the Antelope Valley that empowers people to advocate for issues they believe in. She would also like to thank the Hunt family for helping her get one-step closer to her dream by awarding her with this scholarship.

About the Scholarship: Holly Hunt graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health Education at CSUN in 1979, was admitted to the Master of Public Health in Health Education graduate program and worked with children as a teacher. While Holly was a graduate student at CSUN she tragically passed away. In 2006, her siblings, Beryl Loughlin and Ronald Hunt, along with his wife Joyce, established this scholarship in memory of Holly. This scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate public health student who contributes to the community and is committed to public health.

The Judge Julian Beck Scholarship

 ScDenise Clarkholar: Denise Clark

Major: Radiologic Sciences

About Denise: Denise currently resides in her hometown of Oxnard. She volunteers her time to opportunities that benefit radiologic sciences as well as fundraises for her son’s school. She is currently working on an article titled, “How ‘Rad’ is Radiologic Technology: A Student Perspective on Clinical Education” for publication in the newsletter, the Technigram. Denise is one of three students selected to represent the CSUN Radiologic Sciences program at the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) Educational Symposium in Florida this summer.She would like to thank the Judge Julian Beck Scholarship Foundation for their contributions towards her academic career. Her future aspirations include becoming a successful lead computed tomography (CT) technician and to start a scholarship at CSUN that would benefit students.  

About the Scholarship: Julian Beck was a teacher, politician and judge in Los Angeles and was instrumental in the establishment of San Fernando Valley State College (now CSUN). This scholarship is made possible by a generous contribution from the Judge Julian Beck Health Sciences Endowment that was established in 1984. It is the intention of the donor to provide financial assistance to an outstanding senior each year. Recipients should demonstrate a commitment to professional growth and service, leadership, have a positive and professional attitude, and, where applicable, outstanding clinical potential. 

The Lennin H. Glass Scholarship

Sylvia FerulloScholar: Sylvia Ferullo

Year Awarded: 2017  

Major: Public Health

About Sylvia: Before Sylvia started the masters of public health program at CSUN, she was a broadcast journalist for more than 30 years. She was motivated to enter the health field early on, first as a teenager working with her father in dental health clinics in Baja, Mexico and then later when reporting on health issues for television news audiences. Sylvia is currently working as an intern for Health Net of California, Department of Cultural and Linguistic Services. Her long-term goals include planning, implementing and evaluating programs that address obesity, diabetes and other preventable chronic conditions. Sylvia said it was an honor and a great boost in confidence to receive this scholarship. As an older student returning to school, she was nervous about the challenges she would face. Receiving the scholarship emboldened her to continue with her studies to become a change agent in the world of public health. Sylvia is grateful to the late Dr. Glass and his wife, Rosalee, for acknowledging the barriers faced by older students and for providing their support. It was gratifying for her to meet Dr. Glass’ son and learn from him that his father contained a tireless passion for public health.

About the Scholarship: The late Dr. Lennin H. Glass was a professor of health sciences and served as the Dean of the School of Communication and Professional Studies (now Health and Human Development) from 1979-1987. The scholarship was dedicated to Dr. Glass by his wife Rosalee before her passing. The scholarship is made possible due to a generous contribution from the Lennin H. Glass Scholarship Endowment. It is the intention of the donor to provide financial assistance to a returning adult student who can demonstrate a commitment to professional growth and service, leadership and has a positive and professional attitude within the health sciences field.
