How is our money management affected by our parents’ relationship to money?
At the 8th Annual CSUN Academic Research Fellows Colloquium on October 11, Yoko Mimura (Family & Consumer Sciences/Consumer Affairs) will present from her paper, ‘Financial socialization among Chinese American young adults: Focus on filial piety’ written as part of her role as a CSUN 2015-16 Research Fellow. She is one of eight CSUN Academic Affairs Research Fellows campus-wide who will be speaking at the event. Students encouraged to attend the event.
Mimura said her project involved studying what CSUN students from different backgrounds learned from their parents with regard to money. “Through this project, we are trying to show how conventional materials on financial literacy are limited, and thus capture powerful perspectives of less dominant social groups, including Chinese Americans.”
A favorite aspect of this research project, Mimura said, was working with a supportive team. “We were fortunate to involve undergraduate and graduate students in our research team. Hopefully this was a positive educational experience for them. Getting to know our students makes me appreciate them more and feel I can serve them better,” she said.
She also had the opportunity to work with a primary intellectual figure in her educational life, Professor Shigeaki Uno of formerly Seikei University in Japan—as well as several hundred fellow alumni from his Eastern political diplomacy history seminar.
“In his seminar, we learned how traditional Western interpretation of Chinese history was irrelevant from Chinese perspective,” she said. “I feel fortunate to have colleagues and teammates who shaped this project to connect to the teaching of Professor Uno in different ways.”
