Self-care: mental health makes us whole

April 18, 2022

Dear COE Community,

“Over the past decade, we have seen enormous advancement in promoting the notion that mental health is important for everyone, that it can be intentionally strengthened, and that it is intrinsically connected to our physical health and overall well-being,” states Arthur C. Evans, PhD, chief executive officer of the American Psychological Association in his APA Monitor article “Mental health makes us whole.” He addresses recent concerns from some that increased attention to mental health in schools and the workplace is taking way from the “real issues” we should be prioritizing. Dr. Evans argues that “attention to mental health does not happen at the expense of other issues. To the contrary, research consistently shows that good mental health is foundational to what enables us to do things like learn math or reading, make decisions, and socialize with others. For many, this is a shift in how they view mental health—as not only about treating illness but also essential to overall health and to optimizing our daily functioning.”

In keeping with the statements by Dr. Evans, the CSUN campus is committed to wellbeing and offers many mental health resources at the new CSUN revitalize website: https://www.csun.edu/revitalize. Now with over 4,000 views!

Our CSUN Campus Care Recovery Program also is offering 2 exciting self-care events in the next two weeks supporting wellness and self-care for our students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community partners. I strongly urge you to attend these in-person and virtual events!
