COE Self-Care Starting Soon!

January 30, 2017

Dear College of Education Staff and Faculty,

We will soon begin our spring self-care activities and now, more than ever, we need self-care for ourselves and for the world around us. Many of us are engaging in social justice and advocacy as we work to preserve values so essential to ourselves, our students, and our surrounding community and schools. This is important and so needed. But it can also be stressful. Please take care of yourselves as you can take care of students and the community who depend on your support right now!

This week, an opportunity to participate in self-care and social justice is available to the entire campus THIS TUESDAY, Jan. 31st at the CSUN Town Hall II: Coming Together in Times of Uncertainty, from noon-2 at the USU Northridge Center. At this second CSUN-wide town hall, faculty, staff and students have the opportunity to share post election concerns and identify supports. The first CSUN town hall last semester was a huge success, and we encourage all can, to attend this one.

Our college self-care program will dovetail this wonderful event with our own self-care, advocacy and stress reduction double header presentation on Tuesday, Feb. 7th! First, from 11:00-11:30 in Ed 1214/1216, David Boyns and Doug Kaback will discuss campus-wide self-care activities available through the Institute of Health and Well-Being. They will also present some excellent community programs: Bridge to the Future, community gardening, etc. Then immediately following, from 11:30-12, we will have a presentation from our CSUN Counseling center on stress reduction resources for faculty, staff, and students when engaging in advocacy and social justice. This will be an initial introduction with more likely to come later this semester. Come for one or both sessions, and stay to enjoy a Valentines "loving all of us" luncheon!

Also on Feb. 7th, we want to support another excellent university-wide event hosted by our own college Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), the What Really Works! conference at the USU Northridge Center. In addition to excellent presentations by many of our own faculty, this conference weaves a theme of self-care throughout the day, and offers quiet rooms for participants to meditate. Both half and full day attendance with discounts are available. For questions, please contact the CTL at  or 818.677.7494 or you can register at www.csun.edu/ctl
