COE Self-Care Activities Week Eleven

November 21, 2016

Dear COE Staff and Faculty,

In the past week, the COE has offered support through meetings, meditation, and online resources to assist those faculty and staff who have been impacted from the election results. This week, we will dedicate our self-care time to meditation as we continue to offer support during this difficult time for so many. In the coming weeks, there also will be open forums for faculty and students to discuss the impact of this election and how to deal with it, hosted by Equity and Student Affairs, with support from Faculty Council and Equity and Faculty Affairs. Details will be emailed soon. We also encourage faculty to continue to hold discussions with students in classes and for faculty and staff to share within your own circles of support as a way to deal with this challenging time.

We will offer two meditation and stress reduction sessions for faculty and staff this Tuesday. The first meditation session will be this Tuesday from 12:15-12:45 in Ed 1214. This session will focus on relaxation and stress reduction. The second meditation session will be this Tuesday from 2-2:30 in the CTL conference room on the First floor of the COE. This meditation session will focus on relaxation and compassion during difficult times. Faculty, staff, and students can meditate on their own with the help of several leading meditation instructors, who have put together “election emergency” meditations to offer tips and breathing exercises to help those feeling stressed-out manage emotions at http://www.10percenthappier.com/election Finally, please go to our COE self-care website for other great resources available for faculty, staff, and students to discuss post-election results and the impact on us. Resources to discuss these concerns within public school settings with students are listed as well. These resources were sent in by our own COE community.

Below are November self-care activities:

  • Nov. 22nd, Tuesday, 12:15-12:45 in ED 1214 meditation and stress-reduction.
  • Nov. 22nd, Tuesday from 2-2:30 in CTL Conference room on first floor of Ed Building: Meditation and compassion during difficult times.
  • Cancelled and rescheduled for spring semester: Traveling for Bliss: Mechelle N. Best, PhD, Associate Professor, Chair & Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Recreation & Tourism Management will present on travel tips and places that provide wonderful opportunities for self-care!

It truly is a time to be thankful for the all of our faculty and staff here in the COE! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Warmly,

Shari Tarver Behring
