COE Self-Care Activities for Fall 2015

August 23, 2015

Welcome back to a new academic year, and new semester of COE staff and faculty self-care beginning on Tuesday, September 8th, 12-1 in Ed 1216 with the wonderful Ellen Bauersfeld sharing nutrition wisdom! This was a very popular self-care session last spring, and we are so fortunate to have Ellen back for four more sessions throughout this semester. Before sharing more about our new schedule, first a big thanks to all who participated in self-care activities last spring and who helped us collect data about self-care in our college. Our results were very positive, with almost half of the COE staff and faculty participating in at least one session. And of those who did participate, almost half reported that they went on to start some form of regular self-care in their personal life! Check out the self-care website for more details on results at http://www.csun.edu/eisner-education/self-care

Other staff and faculty who did not participate shared informally that they were either already engaged in their own self-care program, or that they supported our self-care program but could not attend due to other responsibilities. We understand and simply want each staff and faculty to feel that our college cares for you no matter what you choose as right for you!

We also looked at feedback from our participant surveys to help shape our self-care program for this fall. Almost all participants surveyed wanted the self-care program to continue. Based on what was most preferred from survey responses, this fall we will offer fewer activities each week, with some new and returning activities, all lead by amazing people, usually on Tuesdays or Wednesdays during the morning or noon hour, and conveniently located in our Education Building rooms 1214 or 1216. We also will take a break from collecting surveys this fall as we launch these adjustments to our program, but will ask each participant to complete a Release of Liability form prior to participating in the first session as is required for any program of this type at CSUN.

Below are some self-care activity highlights scheduled for fall, with more to be announced soon:

Sept. 8 12-1 ED 1216 Nutrition Wisdom:  Dietitian Ellen Bauersfeld returns monthly this semester with more nutrition wisdom!

Sept. 15 12-1 ED 1216 Journey into Mindfulness:  Diane Gehart will offer an overview presentation on mindfulness in this first session. Come to this presentation to learn about the wonders of mindfulness, which will also help participants take full advantage of regular mindfulness mediation sessions this semester.

Sept. 16 12-1 Meet in 1216 Walking the Path with Maria King:  Join our own Maria on a different CSUN walking path each Wednesday. This will be relaxing and fun.

Oct. 6th 12-1 1214 Sustainable U:  CSUN Sustainability Manager Austin Eriksson talks about sustainability at CSUN and at home.

Oct. 20th  12-1 1216 Ellen Bauersfeld:  nutrition wisdom

Nov. 3rd   12-1 1214 Ellen Bauersfeld:  nutrition wisdom

Nov. 24th 12-1 1214 Ellen Bauersfeld:  nutrition wisdom

Continue to watch emails and our self-care website for more activities to be announced soon!

I look forward to seeing both returning and new faces in our continued journey of self-care.

Warmly,

Shari Tarver Behring
