Creating accessible PDF documents is an essential component of most organizations’ digital accessibility process. One of the most efficient ways to move toward the goal of full compliance is to start with your source documents and structure these documents for accessibility.

With a variety of authoring applications now available, from Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to Google Docs to Canva, your choice of authoring tool makes a significant impact on your PDF accessibility process.

This presentation will compare the accessibility of the output from these applications as well as review the steps required to structure source documents for accessibility, including applying text styles, the use of color, alternate text, links, and font attributes.

Developing a better understanding of how to structure your documents for accessibility will make the biggest impact in improving your overall document accessibility efficiency. Additionally, thinking of accessibility at the creation can reduce time and energy when exporting to your final PDF that needs remediation. No special tools required beyond the authoring application, Adobe Acrobat Pro and knowledge of WCAG requirements.
