The PDF Association has begun working on a new specification around Processor Requirements for PDF/UA compliant files. A PDF processor is any software that allows someone to view a PDF, interact with it, and fill in forms, for example. This also includes assistive technologies. There is confusion and inconsistency regarding how PDFs are processed. While commonly used web technologies typically deliver consistent results, the same cannot be said for PDF processors. Results may vary when viewing PDFs in a browser versus viewing them with different desktop applications. In addition, different assistive technologies handle PDFs differently. The goal is to bring together processor and AT developers to discuss current functionality and what can be done differently in accordance with the new PDF specifications to provide better end-user experiences. This session is designed to report on the work that has already been done and to invite—and even inspire—developers providing support for accessibility needs; this includes people who remediate and fix PDFs, developers working on PDF processors that interface with end-users like PDF viewers and web browsers, and Assistive Technology (AT) experts.
