Date & Time
Friday, March 18, 2022 - 3:20 PM PST
Location
Elite 1-3
Description
Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) is taking the world of hearing loss by storm. It is used on broadcast television, on various meeting platforms, on Captioned Telephone, Streaming video content and just about any place that CART Captioning is performed. Consumers need to understand the strengths as well as the weaknesses of ASR especially as it relates to the academic classroom. And it should be noted that the academic classroom is no longer a room with 4 walls. Academic classrooms are on line, in living rooms, and even coffee shops. Setting expectations for consumers is critical. As a pioneer in the voice to text industry, the presenter will trace a historical path of dial-up connections through to automatic speech recognition. Further the presenter will provide an unbiased view of the service, providing participants with the tools necessary to make informed decisions regarding the service for the classroom and for streaming content. Participants will actively discuss successes and failures that have been experienced. Both the successes and failures will be analyzed to fully understand why the happened, how the experiences can be replicated and as well as avoided. A demonstration of ASR will take place. A deeper look will be taken regarding compliance vs. accessibility and what that means to the academic institution as well as the consumer (student). Global examples will be used to demonstrate the concepts of compliance and accessibility. Consumers will leave the workshop fully understanding the nuances of automatic speech recognition, its uses in the academic setting and how to maximize all text services for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
