Focus First: An Approach for Better Access and Usability

Date & Time
Friday, March 18, 2022 - 2:20 PM PST
Location
Orange County
Description

Focus states are one of the most underused and least-understood aspects of accessibility. Worse still, when they’re not applied well to mobile or driving apps the consequences can be downright dangerous.

Shouldn’t the element in focus be the first thing you see when looking at a screen? If so, then you’re in for a re-thinking of how we build apps and approach front-end frameworks. This session will explore different new practices, starting with assigning colors and design tokens up front specifically for focus in your brand palette. We will go far beyond WCAG guidelines and look at focus in on-screen apps like Netflix, where a mouse is not an option. We’ll also look at unexplored possibilities for making focus stand out first with CSS properties, transitions, and micro animations. You should leave with an entirely different understanding of how to approach focus indicators.
