Streaming is the present, and it is the future as more and more people watch their favorite shows online. Online streaming services come in a variety of different flavors. Without consistency in service across devices, navigating them can pose a huge barrier for people with disabilities, thus leaving them behind. A recent project has given us the opportunity to interact with the same content in a variety of contexts using different devices and input modalities (remote vs. game controller vs. voice vs. keyboard) for navigation and selection of content.
We are excited to present our high-level findings in a way that encourages design teams to compare interactions in contexts where the UI is similar, but the underlying codebase and semantics differ. Let's explore the journey of finding the right thing to watch.
Our goal is to help build the body of knowledge around the best practices of streaming video, including:
- Using headings to make the UI easier to navigate
- Exposing the button role for controls
- Robust, accessible names for controls
- Progress bars, announcements of notifications
- Carousel and menu bar considerations
