Join Dr. Bettina Love and Sarah Abdelaziz to learn about “abolitionist teaching”—what it is, how it functions, where it comes from, and what it means in relationship to trauma. Dr. Love and Abdelaziz will highlight components of the Abolitionist Teaching Network (ATN) and the ways in which it reinforces abolitionist teaching principles through its programming, grants, and educator resource development, and as a means to conceptualize abolitionist teaching across many different realms and settings.

Dr. Bettina Love (she/her/hers) is an educator who teaches, writes, researches, and advocates at the intersection of racism, education, and abolition. She is the chair of the board of directors for the Abolitionist Teaching Network and author of the book We Want To Do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom.

Sarah Abdelaziz (they/them/theirs) is a community organizer who has been helping to build people power for a decade. They lean heavily on radical and abolitionist traditions which center Black, Brown, and queer self-determination. Sarah has been an educator in settings ranging from middle school classrooms in the Caribbean to college classrooms in the deep south. They are now the Director of the Activist in Residence program at Abolitionist Teaching Network and are excited to bring their passions together to build with BIPOC education communities for our collective liberation.

The Abolitionist Teaching Network’s mission is to develop and support those in the struggle for educational freedom utilizing the intellectual work and direct action of Abolitionists in many forms.
