Healthcare is notably one of the most gendered industries, with women occupying almost 80% of the field. Despite their majority, women, and women of color in particular, remain highly concentrated in low-wage and caregiving positions, and significantly underrepresented in positions of leadership.

This lecture will explore how gender norms, roles, and expectations in both the home and the workplace interact to perpetuate a gendered division of labor that puts women at a structural disadvantage. It will also review some of the tools that labor unions can provide to advance gender equity and equality in the workplace.

Dr. Julisa McCoy is Researcher and contributing educator with the National Union of Healthcare Workers. She received her PhD from UC Riverside where she specialized in gender studies and race and class inequalities.
