Spring 2022 Newsletter
Hello Faculty and Staff, Welcome to the CSUN Career Center’s Spring 2022 Newsletter! In this edition, we highlight key ways for your students to engage in virtual and in-person career exploration and planning. The Career Center scales its resources to serve students with diverse needs. For example, did you know that Micro-Internships are short-term, paid, and professional experiences? These opportunities can fit into any student’s schedule and may provide a pathway to full-time employment. Did you also know that on average 79.9% of eligible interns receive offers for jobs? (NACE, 2021). Last year, 8,754 internships were posted for CSUN students through Handshake. We encourage students to take advantage of the vast opportunities to engage in career-related learning. We appreciate your partnership in service of student success.
Sincerely,
Nyla Jolly Dalferes |
Interim Director, CSUN Career Center
Welcome our Newest Career Counselor
In November 2021, Dr. Deazell Johnson (he/him/his) joined the CSUN Career Center as a career counselor to help CSUN students clarify their life and career goals through holistic individual and group counseling. With an emphasis on serving students from traditionally underserved communities, Dr. Johnson’s focus is on creating and delivering career programs, events, workshops, and campus-wide partnerships for students who identify as African descent. Moreover, he coordinates the Career Peer Educator Program where he trains and supervises peer educators.
A fellow Matador himself, Dr. Johnson earned his Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (2020) at CSUN and has served the university since 2008, developing his passion for helping students in leadership and administrative roles like academic advisor, adjunct faculty, student outreach coordinator, HSI-STEM student services program coordinator, and resident advisor, to name a few. As a servant leader, Dr. Johnson’s passion, intersectionality, pedagogy, and skillset ultimately shape his commitment to serving all students and leading them to their strengths.
The Career Center invites you to connect with Dr. Johnson if you have questions and/or would like to refer students for career counseling. His office is located in the Bayramian Hall, Room 413 and email is deazell.johnson@csun.edu

All students are invited and encouraged to attend our virtual events.
Step 1: Register for the fair in Handshake.
Step 2: Research the employers attending, use Handshake, LinkedIn, their website, and any other resources you can find.
Step 3: Sign up for 30-minute group information sessions and 10-minute one-on-one appointments. Practice your elevator pitch and add the sessions to your calendar.

Counselor Corner
Your students have likely heard the term "mentor" before, but may not have a clear understanding of the benefits of having one, or even how to go about procuring one. Feel free to share the following advice with your students, should they broach the topic.
When it comes to networking, don’t discount the notion of seeking out a mentor in your field. Mentors can guide you through the cultural norms of an industry and introduce you to individuals that could help you get your foot in the door of an organization. They also provide an unbiased source of advice that can help you shine during internships or even on the job.
Finding a mentor generally starts with identifying experts in your field by joining professional organizations, subscribing to industry publications, or searching on LinkedIn.
Additionally, the CSUN Alumni Organization hosts their "Ask a Matador" program that connects you with alumni experts. Check it out!
Once you make your initial connection, let them know you are a student at CSUN, and seek out an informational interview, where you can ask questions like:
- "“How did you break into the industry or this organization?"
- "What looks good on a resume?"
- "What did you wish you knew before starting your job?"
- "What do you like most/least about your position?"
- "What is a good way to obtain entry-level experience in the field?"
Be sure to thank them for sharing their time and expertise, and update them on your progress. Grow the relationship by connecting on LinkedIn and continuing to stay in touch with one another via email or volunteer opportunities.
If you feel that your rapport has strengthened over time, you can take the next step by formally asking that individual to be your mentor. It is often considered a great honor to be asked, though not everyone has the time to fully commit to it. Traditionally, mentors and mentees meet once a month for the first year or so and gradually lessen over time. Mentors are a great opportunity to explore throughout your academic career and beyond.
