Sat., Jan. 21, 2012, 9 a.m. Registration begins December 21, 2011.
Registration is required.
Take the mystery out of rose pruning with this hands-on workshop. The class will begin with a brief introduction to the 'why', 'when', and 'how' of rose pruning. Participants will then have the opportunity to put theory into practice when the class goes outdoors to prune some of the campus roses.
Steve Gerischer, proprietor of Larkspur Garden Design, lectures on a wide variety of horticultural topics. His busy schedule includes serving as a board member for the Southern California Horticultural Society, teaching classes at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Covina Valley Adult Education Program, and putting in an occasional appearance on HGTV (most notably "Landscaper's Challenge").

Registration begins February 3rd.

Heirloom tomatoes are at the top of the list of favorites for the home gardener, especially with the almost unlimited number of varieties that are available. Knowing which varieties are best suited for the San Fernando Valley's hot summer climate can make the difference between an adequate crop and a super-abundant bonanza of fruit. There are also strategies to planting (where, when), fertilizing (when, how much), and watering (when, how much) which can maximize the harvest.
Scott Daigre, proprietor of Tomatomania and owner of PowerPlant, is nationally known for his tomato events. His home garden hosts dozens of heirloom varieties every year and he is eager to share his practical knowledge with you. Do you know when too much heat is bad for tomatoes? Or, why it is recommended to not plant tomatoes in the same location two years in a row?
Afterward you will feel like you've earned a degree in tomato growing, but there won't be a quiz at the end of class. Instead, your newly-gained knowledge will prepare you to grow your best heirloom tomatoes ever!
Registration is required. Please register via e-mail at: botanicgarden@csun.edu
