The Boyle Heights native, a son of Mexican immigrants, lived a life of accomplishment. He was the first Mexican American student body president at East Los Angeles College and one of the first Mexican Americans to earn a doctorate from Harvard, later becoming a history professor at Cal State Northridge when it opened in 1956. -- Los Angeles Daily News

CSUN Marine Biologists Get Grant to Study Effectiveness of California’s Artificial Reefs

California State University, Northridge marine biologists Kerry Nickols and Mark Steele, along with Oregon State University marine biologist Will White, have been awarded a $220,279 grant by the California State University Council on Ocean Affairs, Science and Technology (COAST) to help the state of California determine how artificial reefs influence fish populations. The researchers will explore whether artificial reefs attract fish from other areas or “produce” fish by virtue of providing additional habitat. -- SCV News

Deep divisions, further delay for California's math guidelines

Katherine Stevenson, a math professor at California State University, Northridge, who has worked with teachers in Los Angeles Unified, said, "It's very hard for teachers not to get lost in skills and practices that are very concrete, so I applaud the big ideas." But, she said, preparing lesson plans and classroom tasks will require an intense amount of preparation and continuous training. "If you look at the framework as an aspirational document, I am OK with it, but I have real concerns as an actionable document." -- Redwood City Pulse

Fast Break Desk adds nine reporters to bolster Los Angeles Times’ breaking news coverage

Salvador Hernandez came to the desk in July from BuzzFeed News, where he covered a variety of topics, including viral moments, criminal justice issues, the growing militia movement and natural disasters. While there, he was dispatched to cover the aftermath of hurricanes and the impact of immigrant workers in North Carolina and Texas, uncovered that the FBI was secretly using the private database of an at-home DNA testing company to expand its genetic DNA investigations without users’ knowledge, and camped out in the snow in rural Oregon and the Texas border deserts to report on growing militia groups. Hernandez also covered crime as a reporter at the Orange County Register. He is a Los Angeles native and a graduate of Cal State Northridge. -- Editor and Publisher
