U.S. National Lab Research Payloads Headed for ISS

Sharlene Katz, Ph.D., P.E., California State University Northridge, Northridge, CA A CubeSat that tests out a new light-weight, longer-life battery system designed for the cold temperatures of space. A new configuration of high energy density materials known as ultra-capacitors, along with updated lithium-ion battery technology allows CSUNSat1 batteries to operate at very low temperatures without the added weight of a defrost system. A set of quantitative power and capacity goals are used to assess the battery system performance over a 200 day mission period. -- Parabolic Arc

CSUNSat1 California State University Northridge (CSUN) Sat1 California State University Northridge – Northridge, California Jet Propulsion Laboratory – Pasadena, California The primary mission of CSUNSat1 is to test an innovative low-temperature-capable energy storage system in space, raising its TRL level to 7 from 4 to 5. The success of this energy storage system will enable future missions, especially those in deep space to do more science while requiring less energy, mass and volume. This CubeSat was designed, built, programmed, and tested by a team of over 70 engineering and computer science students at CSUN. The primary source of funding for CSUNSat1 is NASA’s Small Spacecraft Technology Partnership program. -- IConnect007
