Jerry Powell, Lincoln, 1967: Jerry joins the other Powell brothers — Art, a receiver, and Charlie, a defensive lineman — on the top 10. The 1967 San Diego Section Player of the Year, Jerry started his career at Michigan State, returned to play at San Diego City College, then moved to Cal State Northridge, where he was an all-conference receiver. He was briefly with the Chargers before bouncing to the World League, where he starred for the Hawaiians as a receiver and kick returner. A torn ACL ended his career. -- San Diego Union-Tribune

But according to the Union-Tribune, the move hit a wall in April when the Big West Conference’s current member schools voted against admitting the Tritons. The Union-Tribune reported that the conference’s UC schools — Irvine, Riverside, Santa Barbara and Davis — voted for the Tritons to be admitted, but its CSU members — Long Beach, Fullerton, Northridge and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo — voted against the Tritons. It was unclear how the ninth member, Hawaii, voted. -- FOX 5

The Big West Conference on Monday announced it would add Cal State Bakersfield and UC San Diego as its 10th and 11th members. Existing Big West members include the University of Hawai‘i, UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton. -- Bakersfield Californian
