Glendale Community College Names Andriassian Vice President

Andriassian is an alumnus of GCC, where he received his associate in arts degree and was the Associated Students president and student trustee. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in business management from Loyola Marymount University and a master’s of public administration from Cal State Northridge, and he will defend his doctoral dissertation titled “Socio-Politically Conscious Leadership” at USC in June. -- Glendale News-Press

Albert Lapides OBITUARY

ALBERT MORRIS LAPIDES Born in Los Angeles on December 25, 1927. The second child and only son of Joseph A. and Sara Lapides, he grew up in the Fairfax district of Los Angeles. After graduating Fairfax High, he entered U.C. Berkeley, graduating in 1949 with a B.S.M.E. degree. At Cal, Al was a member of the riflery team and was a coxswain for crew. He joined the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity, become president in his senior year. As all students at the time, he was member of the ROTC, and joined the U.S. Army Air Corps upon graduation, then transferring to the US Air Force in 1950, serving at Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH. After leaving the Air Force in 1954, Al spent the next 17 years in the defense industry. During his time at Marquardt and Litton Industries, he went back to school and earned his MS in Management Science from San Fernando Valley State College (now CSUN). In 1971 he became an Executive Search Consultant. One year later he co-founded Replacement Parts Industries, Inc., providing replacement parts for medical and dental equipment. In 1956, a friend from high school introduced Al to his wife-to-be. It took only seven dates in eight weeks for him to pop the question (and get a positive answer). Three months later they were married. Al was active at Temple Ramat Zion (TRZ), CSUN and with the Northridge Hospital Foundation. At TRZ he served on numerous committees, including youth group advisor. At CSUN he served on the President’s Club and the CSUN Foundation, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Northridge Hospital Foundation. He also served as a mentor to MBA students at UCLA. -- Los Angeles Daily News

Melody Thomas Scott and Edward J. Scott React to Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Awards

The secret to his success, and theirs, is that Scott did the work. He was staging safety presentations in the fourth grade and by the time he graduated from California State University at Northridge, had his sights on producing. After begging his way into a job at NBC, he showed up to the dusty mailroom wearing a suit and tie and quickly climbed the ladder – learning everything he could from everyone he crossed. -- Sacramento Bee

Pierce College class of 2024 graduates at Shepard Stadium with hugs and cheers

Recent CSUN graduate Megan Kalayjian was at the commencement to celebrate her brother Krikor, who graduated with an associate degree in business, and will be transferring to her alma mater. “It’s such a great accomplishment,” Kalayjian said. “I feel like some people don’t take into account that, just because it’s community college, it’s worth celebrating. Governor Newsom announces appointments 6.6.24

Debra Lee, of Carson, has been appointed Chief of the Division of Occupational Safety and Health at the Department of Industrial Relations, where she has been Acting Chief since 2024 and has served in several positions since 1994, including Deputy Chief for Safety, Acting Deputy for Safety, Regional Manager, District Manager, Associate Industrial Hygienist and Industrial Hygienist. Lee was an Industrial Hygienist at Northrop Grumman from 1992 to 1994 and a Hazardous Waste Specialist at the Georgia Department of Natural Resources from 1990 to 1992. Lee was an Industrial Hygienist at Health Science Associates from 1987 to 1990 and for TRW Electronics and Defense from 1985 to 1987. Lee earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental and Occupational Safety and Health from California State University, Northridge. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $202,368. Lee is a Democrat. -- Gov. Gavin Newsom

Hart District Appoints New Assistant Superintendent, Principal

Adam Barrios began working full-time with the Hart District in 2007 as a math teacher at Placerita Junior High School before moving on to work in number of administrative positions that prepared him for this next step in his career. Barrios worked as an assistant principal in the Pasadena Unified School District (2014-17) before returning to the Hart District as an assistant principal at Placerita and Sierra Vista junior high schools, and later at Valencia and Canyon high schools in that same role. His experiences at each of those school sites have helped to provide Barrios the invaluable understanding and knowledge to assess, identify, and address areas of need and growth at the school and student level. He is deeply committed to fostering an environment that nurtures the academic, social, cultural, and emotional growth of students. LA500 2024: Karen Hofmann

Hofmann is the sixth president of ArtCenter College of Design, and the first woman in the role. She previously was ArtCenter Provost and served as chair of ArtCenter’s Product Design department. She began teaching at the college in 2002. She was given the Industrial Designers Society of America Education Award for her contributions to the field of industrial design education. Hofmann spent several years at Johnson Controls Automotive Systems Group in Advanced Design and Research and, for the last decade, has been teaching and consulting. She graduated from ArtCenter in 1997 with a B.S. in product design and has a B.A. in psychology from California State University – Northridge. -- Los Angeles Business Journal
