(1) The CSU has extended the Fall 2021 admission application filing period. Fall 2021 applications will be accepted Oct. 1-Dec. 4, 2020. Graduate and credential programs typically remain open past the deadline.

Application Filing Periods & Deadlines

To apply for admission to California State University, Northridge, you'll need to know:

  1. Is the application filing period for your target degree program open or closed?

Initial Filing Periods 

The initial application filing period is the minimum time that applications for admission are considered. The initial filing periods for CSUN are:

  • FALL semester admission: October 1 - November 30*
  • SPRING semester admission: August 1-31* 

*Graduate programs typically remain open for an extended time beyond the initial filing period. For details, select the “Graduate Student” row below.

First-Time Freshman

Fall 2020 Admission

Initial Filing Period:

October 1 through November 30, 2019.

Freshman applications must be received during the initial filing period.

For Fall 2020 admission, CSUN is impacted to first-time freshmen and 11 impacted majors.

Impacted Majors:

Four Undergraduate Programs in Business:

  • Accountancy

  • Finance - Financial Analysis

  • Finance - Financial Planning

  • Finance - Insurance

And these seven majors and their options:

  • Biology

  • Cinema & Television Arts

  • Communication Studies

  • Health Sciences

  • Kinesiology

  • Music

  • Psychology

Current Status:

Important Dates:

SAT/ACT scores are required for all first-time freshmen and must be received by Admissions and Records no later than January 15, 2020. Please see additional requirements at Applicants.

 

Spring 2021 Admission

Initial Filing Period:

August 1-31, 2020.

Current Status:

CLOSED. 

CSUN is not accepting first-time freshman domestic resident or nonresident (out-of-state) applications for Spring 2021. The next available application filing period is Fall 2021, which opens October 1, 2020.

Transfer Student

Lower-division transfer student applications are not currently considered for admission to Cal State Northridge. To confirm that you are an upper-division transfer student, please see Applicants.

Fall 2020 Admission

Initial Filing Period:

October 1 through November 30, 2019.

Transfer applications must be received during the initial filing period.

For Fall 2020 admission, CSUN is impacted to transfer students and 11 impacted majors.

CSUN is impacted to transfer students and 11 impacted majors. Please see CSUN Impaction and Applicants.

Current Status:

CLOSED. 

CSUN is not accepting resident nor nonresident (out-of-state) applications from transfer applicants for Spring 2021, including associate degrees for transfer (AA-T and AS-T) applications. The next available application filing period is Fall 2021, which opens October 1, 2020.

The following programs will be open to eligible CSU students for Fall 2020 from August 14-28, 2020:

Please note:  The Talented High School Program is CLOSED for the foreseeable future. The program relied on grant funding, which is not currently available.

Credential Student

Fall 2020 Admission

Initial Filing Period Begins:

October 1, 2019.

University applications for graduate programs, including credential programs, are typically accepted after the initial filing period. However, some individual programs may have earlier closing dates.

NOTE: Two (2) applications are required - one to the Credential Program and the other to the University.

The Credential Program application filing period closed July 1, 2020. For more information after July 1, contact the CSUN Credential Office.

Spring 2021 Admission

Initial Filing Period Begins:

August 1, 2020.

University applications for graduate programs, including credential programs, are typically accepted after the initial filing period. However, some individual credential programs may have earlier closing dates.

For individual credential program application deadlines or exceptions, contact the CSUN Credential Office.

NOTE: Two (2) applications are required—one to the individual Credential Program and the other to the University.

Current Status:

OPEN.

If the application filing period for the individual credential program you desire is closed, please do not complete a university application. Contact the Credential Office first.

Credential program closing dates will be published in the Cal State Apply Application Dates & Deadlines search tool and at Credential Application Options.

Graduate Student - Master's and Doctorate

Fall 2020 Admission

Initial Filing Period Begins:

October 1, 2019.

Please note:

  • Graduate applications for master's and doctoral programs are accepted through and usually after November 30, 2019, the end of the initial filing period, until the individual graduate program closes. Individual programs set their own application deadlines.
  • Individual graduate programs may have earlier application closing dates than the University deadline. For individual program application deadlines, contact the department of interest listed at Graduate Programs.

Two (2) applications are often required - one to the University and another to the individual graduate program. Please read Graduate Applicants and contact the department for details.

The Tseng College (extended learning) offers several self-support degree and certificate programs.

CSUN also offers several state-funded university Certificate Programs.

 

Spring 2021 Admission

Initial Filing Period Begins:

August 1, 2020.

Please note:

  • Some masters and doctoral degree programs accept applications only for fall—not spring—admission. Please see "Current Status" below.
  • Applications for open programs will be accepted starting August 1, 2020. Most programs will continue to accept applications after August 31, when the initial filing period ends.
  • Many graduate programs stay open beyond August 31, often as late as November 1. However, individual programs may close earlier. Check deadlines at Application Dates & Deadlines.
  • For individual program application deadlines, please contact the desired Graduate Program.

Note that two (2) applications are often required - one to the University and the other to the individual graduate program. Read more at Graduate Applicants.

Both a department AND a university application are often required.

Post-Baccalaureate, Unclassified Student

Post-baccalaureate unclassified applications are not currently considered for admission to CSU, Northridge. Read more about classified and conditionally classified status in the University Catalog.

Second Bachelor's Student

 

Fall 2020 Admission

Initial Filing Period:

October 1 through November 30, 2019.

Current Status:

CLOSED.

CSUN will accept second bachelor's degree applications for the Radiologic Sciences major only. Please review admission requirements at Second Bachelor's Degree Applicant.

Applications for second bachelor's degrees in all majors are strictly limited at this time. All applicants are urged to consider whether a graduate program better meets their needs.

Fall 2020 Admission

Initial Filing Period begins:

October 1, 2019.

Returning undergraduate students must apply for admission during the initial filing period, October 1 through November 30, 2019. Review the requirements for returning students, whether in good standing or previously disqualified in the last semester at CSUN, at Returning Applicants.

Returning graduate students: Please check closing dates for individual graduate programs in the Cal State Apply search tool at Application Dates & Deadlines and on the individual program website.

Current Status:

Returning Undergraduates: CLOSED. See important date below.

Returning Graduate students: OPEN if the program is open. Check the "Graduate Student" row above.

Important Dates:

Returning undergraduate students who were disqualified in their last attendance at CSUN must complete the Previously Disqualified Student Questionnaire (.pdf) and submit it to Admissions & Records no later than April 1, 2020. For details, see Returning PD Student.

 

Spring 2021 Admission

Initial Filing Period begins:

August 1, 2020.

Current Status:

Returning Undergraduates: CLOSED.  

  • CSUN is not accepting returning freshman or transfer student applications for Spring 2021, whether previously disqualified or in good academic standing.
  • The next available application filing period is Fall 2021, which opens October 1, 2020. 

Returning Graduate Students:  OPEN if the individual program is open. Check the "Graduate Student" row above.
