Astronaut on Cathedral - |
|
Both the austronaut and the ice cream eating gargoyle are part of the decorative stone carvings on the outside of the cathedral. This, of course, raises the question how did they know of austronauts and did they have ice cream cones back in the 16th century when the cathedral was built. Of course they did not. However, Old buidings need periodic restauration and repair and stone masons are known to add tiny signatures or carvings (sometimes of themselves) to monuments. Both the astronaut and the ice cream fiend were added during a 1990's restauration. Now they provide entertainment and a challenge to visitors who must find them. Not so easy when one consers how many carvings adorn the facade of the cathedral.
