The course will examine Tolkien’s two major works, The Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings, exploring the themes of identity, heroism, good and evil, fantasy contained therein. We will attempt to analyse these text in terms of broad questions about the place of Tolkien’s work in literary history, its relation to its sources and historical context, and its adaptation in popular culture.
