Academic Degree Programs

HHD's Academic Programs are offered through our Academic Departments. We offer 26 degrees (12 undergraduate; 14 graduate), 14 certificate programs (some in collaboration with Tseng College), and 3 credentials through 9 academic departments.

Undergraduate Programs

The Communication Disorders and Sciences major involves studies in the disciplines of speech and hearing sciences, audiology, and speech-language pathology. Undergraduate programs offer an emphasis in either audiology or speech-language pathology.

The Department of Child and Adolescent Development offers a degree program which leads to a Bachelor of Arts in Child and Adolescent Development. Students in the major choose either the Applied Development Science Option or Early Childhood Development Option.  Students in the major seeking an academically enriched undergraduate experience can choose to participate in the Department's Honors Program. Students majoring in other fields can choose to join the Minor in Child and Adolescent Development.

The curriculum for the Bachelor of Science Degree stresses the development of a basic science foundation and an in-depth coverage of applied concepts on environmental and occupational health. An Industrial Hygiene Option allows the designation "Industrial Hygiene Option" to appear on students' transcripts and diplomas. Talk to your advisor if you are interested in this option.

Family and Consumer Sciences: Apparel Design and Merchandising

Family & Consumer Sciences: Apparel Design and Merchandising undergraduate program at CSUN offers an analytical study of concepts and their application as they relate to the design, production, and merchandising of textile and apparel. Students may select an emphasis of study within the program in Apparel Design and Production (Pattern A), Apparel Merchandising (Pattern B), or Textile and Apparel (Pattern C). 

Family and Consumer Sciences: Consumer Affairs

The Consumer Affairs program focuses on theories and principles from consumer behavior and education, government and public policy, management, finance, law and communication as they apply to consumers.

Family and Consumer Sciences: Family and Consumer Sciences Education

The Family and Consumer Sciences Education option at CSUN provides a background in FCS Education coursework for students wanting a broad FCS educational background or to pursue a teaching single subject credential.  FCS Education students who wish to pursue a Home Economics credential must seek subject matter clearance by completing passage of the CSET.  Please see the Credential section in the University Catalog.

Family and Consumer Sciences: Family Studies

To enhance the quality of life for Individuals, families, and communities through education, research, creative endeavors and public services.  Students may select an emphasis of study within the program: Childcare & Administration (Pattern A), and Family Services (Pattern B).

Family and Consumer Sciences: Interior Design

The Interior Design program option at CSUN prepares students to analyze, design, and implement living/working environments that are functionally efficient and aesthetically satisfying to diverse populations.

Family and Consumer Sciences: Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Science

The Nutrition, Dietetics and Food Science (NDFS) option under the Family and Consumer Sciences department at CSUN combines the application of physical, biological, and social sciences to create an outstanding foods and nutrition program. 

 

The degree program in Health Administration:  Do you want to make a difference in the important field of healthcare, but aren’t interested in a clinical position? An undergraduate degree in Health Administration prepares you for entry level management related positions in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, physician practices, public health departments, mental health organizations, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, consulting firms, health insurance organizations and healthcare associations. Kinesiology: Applied Fitness

This option is designed to prepare the student with the necessary knowledge and skills to analyze movement and to conduct and administer physical fitness programs. The option is particularly valuable for the student interested in employment in fitness assessment labs or fitness centers.

Kinesiology: Dance

CSUN dance is a dynamic, rapidly growing area of study – one that draws students with an interest in performance and/or pedagogy. Within the Department of Kinesiology, and in collaboration with the Music and Theatre Departments, three concerts are produced each academic year, while multiple studio performances are offered at the completion of each semester.

Kinesiology: Exercise Science

This option is designed to prepare the student with the necessary knowledge and skills to analyze movement and to conduct and administer physical fitness programs. This option is ideal for those intending to pursue graduate study in a variety of allied health fields (e.g. Physical Therapy, Medical School, etc.). 

Kinesiology: Physical Education

Physical Education Teacher Education prepares professionals capable of delivering diverse programs that promote self-directed, responsible, physically active lifestyles in school aged children and youth in urban settings across the state and region.

Kinesiology: Sport Studies

This option is designed for students who have an interest in sport but do not want to become physical education teachers or clinicians in exercise science related occupations. The Sport Studies option focuses on the critical examination of sport in the contexts of historical and contemporary society, emphasizing skills in cultural analysis and critical thinking pertaining to the administration, leadership, psychological, historical, philosophical, and sociological aspects of sport. The BS in Sport Studies will prepare students for careers in sport leadership as well as for graduate work in sport studies, sport management, or other related fields.

Nursing: Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (A-BSN) 

The Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (A-BSN) is a fast-paced program that prepares students for a career in nursing. Designed for those who already hold a bachelor's degree (in any field), graduates of this 15-month program can take the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX) required for licensure as a registered nurse (RN).

Nursing: ADN-BSN

The ADN-BSN Community College Collaborative Program is a collaborative model for academic progression in Nursing that links CSUN with designated California Community College (CCC) partners. This program enables the ADN student to earn to a BSN degree in just approximately 3 years from the start of the ADN program to the BSN graduation. 

Nursing: Registered Nurse (RN) to Bachelor of Science

The mission of the Registered Nurse (RN) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is to develop professional nursing leaders in all areas of practice who can apply new and/or past nursing knowledge and build upon existing competencies. The B.S. in Nursing is designed to prepare nurse to function both independently and interdependently with other professionals in a wide variety of settings, and to meet present and future health care needs of society. The program is designed to articulate with community college programs and provide a baccalaureate completion program for licensed registered nurses with an associate degree in nursing or its equivalent.

 

 

The Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) program serves students interested in pursuing careers in health prevention, research, epidemiology, nursing, and any health-related medical or clinical career (e.g., nursing, dentistry, etc.). The program prepares students to plan, implement, and evaluate health and human service programs and work in the health-related or clinical field. Graduates of the BSPH program are employed by public and private health agencies (city, county, state, and national), hospitals, schools, corporations, nonprofit, and professional consulting organizations. Upon completion of the BSPH program, students pursue graduate programs or clinical degrees. The Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences is offered through the California State University, Northridge (CSUN) Department of Health Sciences, part of the College of Health and Human Development, as a Bachelor Degree. Graduates of the CSUN RT Program receive a diverse educational background as well as greater opportunities for advancement and mobility within the profession of Radiologic Sciences. In addition to proficiency in general Medical Imaging, RS Program graduates are educated in a variety of specialized imaging procedures, including Computed Tomography, Cardiovascular Imaging and Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

 

The Department offers Bachelor of Science Degree in Tourism, Hospitality, and Recreation Management. Course work includes experiential learning and professional internships that put students in touch with the community and professional setting. With the guidance of an experienced student-centered faculty advisor, students choose electives tailored to their personal career objectives with a wide array of emerging human service career paths in areas of focus such as:

Minor Programs

A minor in gerontology complements a wide variety of majors and can help you launch your career. Gerontology is the interdisciplinary study of the aging process and the needs of older adults. It includes the study of the physical, mental and social changes that take place as well as the impact of aging upon policy and society. Students who graduate with a minor in gerontology are in demand for jobs in social services, allied healthcare, case management, recreation and tourism management, administration and direct services in a variety of settings.

CSUN’s Minor in Human Lactation prepares students for careers as lactation educators and enables them to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to educate and support breastfeeding families from the time the woman is pregnant to beyond the infant’s first year of life.

Graduate Programs (Masters)

Internationally recognized for its expertise in disability services, CSUN created its online Assistive Technology Studies and Human Services (ATHS) program to meet the growing demand for skilled AT specialists, who can assess, assist, train, and empower those using assistive technology in their daily lives. As the first master’s degree of its kind in Southern California, CSUN’s ATHS program prepares students to synthesize the interconnections between human and technological factors, explain and interpret product design and function, assess AT users’ needs, interpret the legal and political history of assistive technology, and develop relevant delivery protocols.

Offered in collaboration with CSUN’s College of Health and Human Development, this two-year, online, 10-course program prepares working professionals for rewarding careers that enhance the lives of those who rely on assistive-technology devices.

The Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) is a 2-year, 6-semester, 64-unit, professional program dedicated to the development of high-quality healthcare professionals. Our program begins in the summer of each academic year. Please review the Academic Curriculum for semester-by-semester requirements. 

The Master of Science Degree in the option of Speech-Language Pathology leads to fulfillment of the academic requirements for certification as a speech-language pathologist by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, as well as fulfillment of the academic requirements for licensure as a speech-language pathologist in California and other states, and academic fulfillment of the requirements for a speech-language pathology specialist credential in the State of California for employment in the public schools.

The MS program is built on a foundation of course work provided by the BS - Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences offered by the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health. Thus, MS candidates will have to have completed the same courses required of BS - EOH students before becoming fully classified graduate students.

The Master of Sciences (MS) in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) with an option in Apparel Design and Merchandising (ADM) is suitable for aspiring professionals looking for leadership positions in the apparel and textiles industries.

The Master of Science (MS) in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) with an option in Consumer Affairs and Family Studies (CAFS) is suitable for aspiring professionals looking for leadership positions in corporate, government, and non-profit settings.

The Department of Kinesiology at California State University, Northridge offers a graduate program which leads to the development of scholars, future leaders, and educators in Kinesiology. The graduate program includes academic as well as practical experiences in the student's chosen area of study. Applications are accepted for both Fall and Spring admissions.

Our department has a valued faculty committed to assisting students in their professional preparation for an advanced degree. Over 15 faculty members whose research interests span the spectrum of Kinesiology mentor students in our program.

The Department of Kinesiology at California State University, Northridge offers The Master of Science in Kinesiology degree.  Students can further focus their studies by taking elective coursework in the following Kinesiology subdisciplines:

Master of Public Health: Community Health Education

The graduate program in Community Health Education (CHE) provides advanced training for professionals who plan to work in community-based organizations, health clinics, hospitals, public health agencies, and other private and public health and human service organizations. The CHE Program trains students to build healthy communities through planning and evaluating health promotion interventions, developing and facilitating community partnerships, and designing culturally competent health education curricula and health communication messages. The graduate program is intended for persons interested in developing and/or improving their knowledge of recreational sport management or hospitality, travel and tourism. Students progress through the program as a cohort and are actively engaged in courses and internships on evenings and weekends. The graduate program offers two specializations:

  • Tourism Management
  • Recreational Sport Management/ Recreation Management

The graduate program is intended to prepare students for professional careers as directors, managers, supervisors, or coordinators in travel/tourism and hospitality, event planning, recreational sport management, recreation facility management, nonprofit and entrepreneurial organizations, campus recreation, outdoor education and adventure recreation, public recreation, and human service agencies. This graduate program is not intended to prepare students for careers in professional or collegiate sport programs.

The Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) program at California State University Northridge is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE), 11480 Commerce Park Drive, Suite 220, Reston, VA 20191  (703) 226-1056  https://acaeaccred.org/ for the period of February 7, 2023, to February 28, 2027.

California State University, Northridge (CSUN) offers an entry level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Degree. CSUN's Physical Therapy program is proud of its over fifty-five year history of graduating outstanding Physical Therapists who serve the public in the State of California and throughout the United States. CSUN's DPT program has maintained accreditation throughout its history. Our Graduation Rate is 100% and an average of 99% 1st-attempt pass rate on the Board Exam. One hundred percent of our students are employed within 6 months.
