Examples of Esophogeal Speech and an Artificial Larynx

Example 1: Novus Esophogeal Speech--This sound for esophogeal speech is created by forcing a small bit of oral air into the top of the esophogus and then releasing it causing the to sphinctor to vibrate. The resulting complex tone is much deeper than that of the larynx. Because oral pressure is used, there is a limited supply of air and the length of the sound is always a problem. Techniques can be learned to make it more continuus however to appear to achieve longer sentences on one "breath." This example is of a novus speaker.

Example 2: Experienced Esophogeal Speech--This speaker has had much practice in esophogeal Speech. In fact he is the actor Jack Hawkings. You can see him as the Judge in the Movie QB VII. Please turn your VOLUME to FULL on this one as it is very soft.

Example 3: An Artificial Larynx--Not everyone can learn esophogeal speech. Some prefer to use a vibrating machine that creates a resonance in the pharyngeal, nasal and/or oral cavities. It is easy to learn to use, but is sounds somewhat mechanical.
