ONE YEAR÷a time to be one! Luria hypothesized that the human brain achieves a level of organization, at around one year, that no other mammal is able to reach. That is the unification of the brain into one single functioning unit. It is at this point that symbolic communication becomes possible.
And it is at this point that the child speaks one word. (While all this may be true, the one year old child has accrued a receptive vocabulary of around 50 words.)
