Perceptual Short-term memory enables us to decode whole sentences.
The second, Perceptual short term memory, relates to our ability to retain strings of words while the brain decodes their phonological, morphological, syntactical, semantic and pragmatic significance. This is truly an amazing process!
People often talk to us in long complicated sentences. The meaning of any sentence can only be obtained from an analysis of the interrelation of all the words taken as a whole.
The sentence must also be analyzed in terms of a sentence that may have occurred earlier in the conversation.
There may be 20 to 50 words in a sentence. We must hold on to the words, extract the meaning, and do it fast enough to be ready to receive the next sentence which comes right on itās heels, and the next and the next.
