CD 485 Computer Applications in Communication Disorders and Sciences

SECTION I: Introduction and Course and Overview

Basically, a good clinician should be able to conduct therapy with no more than a piece of paper and a pencil, a pen and/or a crayon.  The field of Communication Disorders existed before computers and some of its greatest therapists thrived on these implements plus typewriters and books.  Correspondence courses too, have been around a long time and have been very successful without the use of the internet.  So why all this?

The answer is facilitation.  The difference between the typewriter and computer is similar to the difference between a bicycle and a car.  Both have their advantages, but the latter will typically take you farther, get you there faster, and allow you to bring more baggage. Anyone, who has used a typewriter to type a term paper using six carbon copies, knows the frustration of typographical/spelling errors and the difficulties of rearranging text and references etc.  Once introduced to word processors, one wonders how students survived without them.  Word processors with their text flexibility, spell checks, graph, charts and clip art capabilities, not to mention the use of sound and digital movies, provide a new and exiting world of communication potential.

The same benefit of facilitation is true for the use of computers in medicine, mathematics, astronomy, art, interior design, engineering, and every field imaginable, including Communicative Disorders and Sciences and Distance Education.  This course is particularly exciting because it addresses two of these area:  The use of computers in the field of Communication Disorders and Sciences; and the use of computers and the internet to pursue, without leaving ones locality, a Master’s degree and Credential in this profession.

In CD 485 we will address specific uses for computers in the field of Communication Disorders and Sciences.  This, of course, is not an exhaustive presentation but a carefully selected sample of applications available to provide you with ideas for further exploration as your needs and interests dictate.  The topics to be discussed will be:

The use of the Computer in Library Research

Augmentative and Alternative forms of communication, AAC

            Computerized therapy programs

Voice Input computer systems and programs -- Speech Viewer

            Interactive video (multi-media) in rehabilitation
