The IRES program in Mathematics will be hosted by
USP (Universidade de
Sao Paulo), at the city of Sao Carlos, located three hours from Sao Paulo city.
USP-Sao Carlos focusses on
Engineering and Technoly, Computer Science, Physics and Mathematics. The
Department of Mathematics has 46 full-time faculty working on mainstream mathematical
research. To know more about this Brazilian University

IRES participants will have travel expenses covered (air fare, lodging, visa, health
insurance) and will receive a
stipend of $1,000 (which is a
substantial amount of money in Brazil). They will travel to
Sao Paulo on June 28. On July 28, participants will travel to Rio de
Janeiro to attend the
Coloquio Brasileiro de Matematica at IMPA.
IMPA is one of the most renowned institute of mathematics in the world. To
know more about IMPA and the
Coloquio visit
http://www.impa.br/opencms/en/ . Participants will return to the U.S. on August 02 from Rio de
Janeiro. You can choose to stay longer
(at their own expense) to tour the
beautiful beaches of Rio Janeiro or any other place in Brazil.
This program will provide an opportunity for American students
to conduct research in collaboration with Brazilian students.
Students will be encouraged to work in pairs, one student from each country.
They will be introduced to possible research problems and to some initial
reading material through this website, before traveling to Brazil.
This way participants will begin exploring some of the topics, have some ideas and
find out their preferences. They will also receive a list of all participants
together with respective email addresses, so they can start interacting with each other
via email. The topics of research this year are in the areas of Ergodic Theory of Numbers,
Wavelets, Fluidynamics, Singular Surfaces, and Algebraic Number Theory.
The first weekend of the program, July 29 and 30, will be devoted to orientation and social
gathering. American and Brazilian students will be introduced to each
other and tour the campus, including the computer
labs, library, and offices. In the first week,
students will take mini-courses, so they can get familiar with the
mathematics that will be used in their research. Towards the end of the
first week and after the resarch problems have been presented to them, groups
composed of American and Brazilian participants will be formed. Each group will
meet individually with their faculty advisor for at least three hours per week,
and faculty will be available every day for an informal question and answer
period. In addition, there will be two permanent IRES faculty, M. Helena Noronha and
Ali Tahzibi, in charge of coordinating all aspects of the program.
Social activities that promote cultural and social interactions among
the participants will be scheduled during weekends.
Towards the end of the program, students will give a final presentation
and write a final report on their research results. Students who have written reports of publishable
quality will then continue to work with their advisors to prepare papers for
publication.
