Every other week teachers will receive two half-day workshops, one on the content/pedagogy training by our staff leaders and the second, the practice session, where teachers practice delivering the new lessons under the critical supervision of project staff. This will help assure that teachers teach the lessons correctly. Professors Gerry Simila and Gini Vandergon will be primarily responsible for Track 1, the California Science Standards-Based Workshop Track.
Year 1 Workshop Outline. These will be new workshops and not a repeat
of the summer CSP workshops. Beside each workshop title, the California
Science Content Standards covered are given in parentheses (California
Department of Education, 1998). All workshops presented in this program
will include hands-on, inquiry-based and discussion components.
At the start of the Eisenhower program, before any workshops are presented,
all teachers will collaboratively outline a syllabus for their courses
that includes the workshops to be presented. This will enable these teacher
leaders to immediately implement each weeks workshop lessons. As
mentioned above, our goal is for the teachers to use their new knowledge
immediately. This will also help provide immediate feedback as to whether
the concepts are reaching the students in the 6-12 classroom. Since the
Eisenhower program is an academy-style, immediate implementation program,
we intend to place teachers in those workshops that cover standards-based
content relevant to their courses. Therefore, we may rearrange the tentative
schedules given later in this narrative, so that a physical science and
biological science workshop might be given on the same day, allowing each
teacher to select the workshop most relevant to their current teaching
schedules.
We will poll the teachers to determine whether they prefer primarily after-school
sessions and/or weekend sessions. Teachers will spend at least 120 hours
in the Eisenhower component of this superfunded initiative.

Each workshop will be modeled by staff in the first half-day. On the second
half-day, the teachers, in groups, will practice teaching the previous
half-day's workshop under staff supervision. Teachers will implement the
new lessons in their classrooms within a few days of their practice sessions.
Staff will visit all teacher classrooms on a scheduled basis to assist
teachers with implementation. Staff will also visit teachers while they
in-service their colleagues.
