Upon successful completion of Trigonometry (Math 240) the student will be able to:
1) Use the trig ratios and the laws of sines and cosines to solve applied problems involving triangles.
2) Graph sinusoidal functions of real numbers and use them to model periodic processes.
3) Use standard trigonometric identities to simplify expressions and to solve trigonometric equations.
4) Perform calculations using the exact trig values of the "special angles” and distinguish between exact values and approximations as appropriate.
Attendance: You may be dropped from the class after 2 absences. You are responsible to get the homework and notes from the days that you are absent.
Homework: The daily homework will be collected every Saturday. Some of the HW problems will be discussed in class. Most exam problems will be similar to HW problems, so be sure you understand the homework.
Quizzes: Quiz questions will be very similar to your homework. If you are keeping up with the homework the quizzes will be no problem.
Exams: There will be three exams during the semester and a final. Missed tests cannot be made up.
Final: The final will be a comprehensive exam.
Note: Work must be shown on all quizzes/tests and homework assignments.
Class Rules: All electronic devices must be turned off before entering classroom and cannot be used in the classroom. Feel free to ask questions but any other conversations will not be tolerated.
Grades: Your grade will be computed from your chapter test scores after your worst test score has been dropped, quizzes/class-work, homework and final. Grades are assigned according to the following scale:
Quizzes/Class work approx. 10%
Homework: approx. 10%
Exams: approx. 50%
Final: approx. 30%
Grades will be awarded on a 10% scale.
90-100% A, 80-89% B, 70-79% C, 60-69% D, 0-59% F.
Drop Policy: It is your responsibility to drop if you decide not to finish the course. I will be monitoring your computer scores and I may exclude you if you are not making appropriate progress, but do not count on me to do so. If you stop working on the computer but do not drop and I do not exclude you, you will be given an F in the course. Be sure to officially drop, if you do not intend to finish the course.
Cheating: ZERO TOLERANCE CHEATING POLICY: Cheating in this class is defined as knowingly or unknowingly participating in the submission of unoriginal work for any assignment, quiz, or test. If it is determined that a student has cheated in this class, the instructor is required to fill out an Academic Dishonesty Report Form, and submit it to the Mathematics chair who will forward the report to the VP of Student Services for disciplinary action which may include suspension or expulsion. In addition to sending the report, the instructor may take the following actions:
1) Assign a non-replaceable fail grade for the assignment, quiz, or test even if doing so results in the impossibility of the student to pass the class.
2) Deduct an amount of points, as specified in the syllabus, from the student’s overall total points for a Conduct Code violation even if doing so results in the impossibility of the student to pass the class.
3) Dismiss the student for the remainder of the class session and/or the next class session.
I encourage studying together. Your classmates can be an excellent resource.
I also want you to feel comfortable asking questions. I can’t help you if you won’t talk to me.
Good luck in Math 240 this Spring!!!
Don’t forget that luck is a result of hard work.
