Ellen SchneidermanDr. Ellen Schneiderman, Professor received her Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1987. Dr. Schneiderman's research, publication and teaching have focused on the development of communication and literacy skills of deaf and hard-of-hearing children within an American Sign Language communication environment. She has organized and presented extensive in-service training programs for school districts and programs serving deaf and hard-of-hearing children, and the parents of deaf and hard-of-hearing children. Topics of in-service training have included creating a quality language acquisition environment, developing literacy skills of deaf learners through American Sign Language, assessing literacy skills, and social-interactive approaches to developing language and communication skills within the classroom environment. Dr. Schneiderman has had extensive classroom teaching experience. She has been a special education teacher with all ages of deaf and hard-of-hearing students. She has taught in residential, special school and mainstreamed environments. She also coordinated the language arts program at the secondary level at a special school for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Dr. Schneiderman has been actively involved with local, statewide and national organizations in working toward improving the educational outcomes for deaf and hard-of-hearing learners.
