How fluent do I need to be in American Sign Language before I start taking classes in Deaf Education?

Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) is strongly recommended before taking coursework in the DHH Specialization (SPED 504D, 560, 561D, 563, 565, 566D).

Can I work/teach while getting a credential from CSUN?

Many of our students work full-time as teachers while attending classes and working toward their credentials at CSUN. There are multiple methods for obtaining a credential. If you are working in a classroom with students who are DHH, you can apply to the CSUN Intern Program in Special Education.

Does my DHH credential allow me to work in K-12th grade?

The Education Specialist Credential for DHH allows teachers to work with students Birth-22 years of age.

What subject matter test do I need to take for the DHH credential?

For candidates who wish to teach in elementary settings (K-6 grade) the Multiple Subjects CSET is recommended. For candidates who wish to teach in middle school or high school, a single subject matter CSET can be taken. I plan to teach in an oral program, do I still need to take the ASLPI?

The ASLPI is required for students obtaining an Education Specialist Credential in DHH, MA students in DHH, and Level II students in DHH.

What is the ASLPI?

The ASLPI is the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview. It is a structured conversation conducted in ASL between the candidate and a trained interviewer. Following the interview, the candidate's performance is given a numerical rating that can range from 0-5 (5 = proficiency equal to native signer). Level I Credential candidates must pass the ASLPI with scores of 2.67 overall and 3.0 comprehension prior to Student Teaching.

How do I start my Level II Induction program?

If it has been 2 years since you last attended classes at CSUN, you must reapply to the university. All Level II students must also apply through the credentials office. Please read the Level II Student Handbook for details.

How long do I have after I get my Level I: Preliminary Credential to get my Level II: Professional Clear Credential?

You have 5 years after you get your Level I: Preliminary Credential to get your Level II: Professional Clear Credential. Start working on your Level II Credential at least two years before your Level I credential expires.

What do I need to do for my Level II Credential?

Level II Program requirements vary by individual. Everyone getting a Level II Credential in DHH is required to be teaching students who are DHH. Fulfilling these requirements is a two year process. Students begin their induction by taking SPED 628DHH and complete their induction four semesters later by taking SPED 629DHH. Part A requirements also consist of SPED 695D: ; one course in a special population (i.e., working with students who are Learning Disabled (SPED 505MM), working with students who are Autistic (SPED ), or working with children with multiple disabilities (SPED )); 50 logged hours of Deaf Community Involvement; and advanced communication proficiency (ASLPI). Part B requirements are individual. They generally consist of 3-4 personal goals written by you and your faculty advisor during SPED 628. You have the entire two years of the induction program to work toward achieving your goals. There are seminars (typically web-based) and observations that accompany SPED 628DHH & 629DHH.

What scores do I need on the ASLPI for the Level II Credential?

Level II students are required to pass the ASLPI with a 3.0 Overall and a 3.5 comprehension score on the ASLPI. If you have already taken the ASLPI and have passed the Level I criteria, you are eligible to take an advanced level ASL course (DEAF 300 or equivalent) to meet the advanced communication proficiency requirement. You must get an 'A' in that class.

What if I haven't passed the ASLPI yet, but my Professional Clear (Level II) credential expires soon?

Candidates for the Professional Clear can request an extension of their credential from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. There are specific guidelines on that website that indicate the process for extending a credential. If you have questions, please contact the CTC.

Can I get my Master's Degree at the same time as I get my Credential?

A credential is required to enter the Master's Degree Program in Special Education; therefore, you can not work on your Credential and your Master's Degree at the same time.

Do I need a Master's Degree to teach in California?

You do not need a Master's Degree to teach in California.

What are the benefits of getting a Master's Degree?

Depending on your school district, you may receive an increase in pay if you have a Master's Degree. You would also have the benefit and privilege of achieving further knowledge and a graduate degree.
