Policy on Adding, Dropping, or Changing the Basis of Grading

The university policy on adding, dropping, and changing the basis of gradingis very strict for a number of reasons having to do with our budget, graduation rates, and grade manipulation. First time freshman and first year transfer students are often unaware of the university policy and occasionally find themselves unable to add or drop classes because they did not complete their paperwork in a timely manner. Moreover, some students who do not pay their fees in a timely manner, may also find themselves disenrolled. This page is intended to help you avoid such problems.

A full version of this policy can be found on page 13 of the Schedule of Classes or at http://www.csun.edu/a&r/current/AdjSchedule.html.

The deadline for adding, dropping, or changing the basis of grading for a class is February 18. After this date, you must demonstrate that you have a "serious and compelling reason" for dropping/adding/changing the basis of grading.

If you wish to add, drop, or change the basis of grading for class, you must follow the procedure below:

  1. For Partial and Complete withdrawals, you must fill out a Change of Schedule Petition form, get my signature, and submit the form to either the Office of Undergraduate Studies or the Office of Graduate Studies. You no longer need to see the Associate Chair of the Department.

  2. If you wish to add a class during the fourth week of classes, you must fill out a Change of Schedule form and get both my signature and the signature of the Associate Chair. You may only add the class if you meet the following criteria:

    • you have been attending classes and trying to add the class within the deadline but had trouble with SOLAR,
    • I am willing to add another student and feel that you can perform the coursework,
    • you obtain a note from me to give the the Associate Chair of the Department.

You will then file the form with the Office of Undergraduate Studies or the Office of Graduate Studies.

  3. After the fourth week of classes, the university has stated that any add/late registration/change in basis of grading will not be permitted.
