Geography 486 |
This course is designed to introduce students to the concepts, issues and theories used by medical and health geographers. The topics covered in this course include the spatial behaviors of infectious diseases, the factors of non-infectious disease, health care access, dietary behaviors, health care planning and other related topics. The exact nature of the topics covered is partly determined by student interest.
Students enrolled in this course typically include geographers, but also students from public health, psychology, public administration, and occasionally other pre-medical and pre-health disciplines.
Students split time between seminar style lecture/discussion sessions and computer lab-based lessons. The idea is to help students understand the important issues in medical/health geography while at the same time, learning how to "do" medical/health geography research.
Current Course Catalog Description:
Examination of the spatial distribution of human diseases at the world, regional, and local scales. Special emphasis on understanding the physical and cultural factors associated with patterns of disease.
This description is terse and does not adequately capture the current state of the field, which has a broader focus on health, rather than just disease.
