Professional Activities
  Leadership Positions
    Chair. Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences. California State University Northridge, Northridge, CA. 1992 to present. (Acting Chair, 1991-1992). Responsiblilities include:
  • Administer academic department of 7 full-time and 12 part-time faculty, 4 full-time staff professionals, 2 part-time staff professionals, 3 office staff, part-time student workers, and 240 graduate and undergraduate majors in both speech-language pathology and audiology.
  • Schedule approximately 95 course sections annually.
  • Administer the recruitment, hiring, retention and promotion processes of faculty and staff.
  • Serve as Director of the CSUN Language, Speech and Hearing Center, supervising the operation of a year-round, full-service university facility. Center presently offers 27 clinics with a total of over 15,000 annual client visits.
  • Prepare reports to and ensure compliance with graduate program accreditation standards of Council on Academic Accreditation of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and National Council on Accreditation in Teacher Education for disciplines of audiology and speech-language pathology. Prepare reports to and ensure compliance with university program review and with Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) for Department’s residential and distance education programs. In 1998, prepared and presented accreditation proposal to WASC Substantive Change Committee for approval of university’s first Distance Education degree program (online M.S. degree program in Speech-Language Pathology).
  • Administer annual budget of over $950,000.

Member. Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Examining Board, California Department of Consumer Affairs. Appointed by Governor Pete Wilson in October 1994, and reappointed in 1997; elected chair January 1995, and re-elected January 1996, January 1997. Elected vice-chair in January 1998. Approximately 10,000 licensees in state jurisdiction.

  • Duties: 1995 to 1997, chaired state license board meetings of nine members; supervised board’s executive officer; supervised licensing, licensee compliance and enforcement, public complaint, and committee budgeting activity; spokesperson for board to public and to state legislature. In 1998-99, as vice-chair, serve on executive, legislative, and audiology committees; advise chair and executive officer on legislation.
  • In 1995: Conducted 13 days of public hearings and meetings; initiated first-time state-wide occupational analysis of licensees; successfully proposed improved regulations of entry-level requirements; successfully introduced a performance review policy of executive officer; and conducted search/screen/hire of an executive officer.
  • In 1996: Conducted 12 days of public hearings and meetings; conducted first-ever, issue-specific, state-wide hearings for sunset review; interviewed/hired committee consultants for 1997 sunset review report.
  • In 1997: Conducted 6 days of public meetings and 2 days of public planning meetings; supervised preparation of first strategic plan for committee; completed sunset review report for Legislature; testified before the Joint Legislative Sunset Review Committee.
  • In 1998: Attended 7 days of public meetings; advised executive officer on strategic planning; advised chair and executive officer on legislation; consultation with state legislators.
  • In 1999: To date, attended 2 days of public meetings; testified before Assembly Health Committee; advised chair and executive officer on legislation; consultation with state legislators.
