Eavesdropping and Wiretapping

• Packet sniffers can be used to watch and decode all data that can be overheard. How the communication can be overheard depends on the media used to transmit the messages.

• Cable:

  • Physical tap: open the insulation and attachs clips
    • Inexpensive, intrusive; can alter electrical characteristics
  • Inductance: Electrical transmission produce magnetic fields which can induce electrical signals.
    • More expensive, non-intrusive
