Stream vs Block Ciphers

• Substitutions are considered “stream” ciphers:

  • Individual characters of plaintext are encrypted immediately into characters of ciphertext.

• Transpositions are “block” ciphers:

  • A group of plaintext characters are encrypted as a block.
  • The block can be the entire message
