Maintenance & Hardware Support
Due to the complexity of hardware components and software applications in a Data Center, time needs to be scheduled for equipment or services to be unavailable. This allows the system administrators to perform system upgrades, patch installs and other application maintenence necessary to maintain the overall stability of the computing environment. This scheduled maintenance is typically scheduled after-hours and sometimes on weekends. The timeframe should attempt to be scheduled on the same day and time of the week so users can become accoustomed to the routine maintenance schedule. Of course emergency maintenance can occur at anytime and is classiffied as unscheduled maintenance.
Data Center Managers are responsible for the following maintenance criteria.
- Securing vendor hardware and software support contracts for all production equipment
- Creating a preventative maintenance schedule for all environment and emergency systems
- Contacting vendor support when a system hardware failure or emergency arises
- Provide written system or service restart instructions or procedures for Operations staff
- Provide escalation and emergency procedures for system failures
- Coordinate the installation and decommission of hardware infrastructure components
- Create work, maintenance and job service schedules for Data Center staff
