Sample Rubric for Essays

   

This rubric can be used by faculty to aid in the evaluation of essays completed in History/Geography 417

Below are criteria upon which various components of an essay may be evaluated.  The better the student meets the criteria outlined in the rubric, the higher the number assigned to the paper for that component of the essay.  The total score on the essay is generated by summing the score for individual component parts evaluated by the instructor.

Criteria

4-Poor 6-Adequate 8- Good 10 -Exemplary
1.  The essay thesis statement is clearly articulated.         
2.  The essay is free from spelling and grammar errors.        

3.  The essay is well organized; topic sentences are used effectively.

       
4.  The tone is confident and scholarly.        

5.  Claims made by the author are accurate.

       
6.  Essay uses sufficient examples to support argument.        
7.  Essay clearly addresses the topic set forth in the assignment.        
8.  * Essay demonstrates student mastery of concept(s).        
9.  * Reasons for the claim being made are well articulated.        

10. * Conclusion is effective.
