Laboratory - Make a Parachute
Our Results

ParachuteTo drop the parachute, we first held it in the middle of the cloth so that the washer and strings dangled down below. Then we released our grip and let it fall.

When we dropped the parachute from waist height, it fell to the floor quickly. It did not have time to open fully. When we dropped it from shoulder height, the parachute was barely able to open before it hit the floor.

ParachuteHowever, when we dropped it from a height of about 2 meters (about 6 feet), this gave the parachute time to open and slow down the speed of the fall.

ParachuteAfter the parachute opened, we observed that the speed seemed to stay about the same. This is the terminal velocity experienced by parachutists.
