Welcome to HHD News Now
With a new look for our Newsletter, the College of Health and Human Development at CSUN continues to share the inspiring accomplishments of our students and the motivating academic and community engagement of our faculty.
To those of you who haven't yet met our new Interim Dean, Mechelle Best, we would like to introduce her to you today. She began her service as Interim Dean with the College last fall after serving as Chair of the Department of Recreation and Tourism Management since 2016, and as faculty for the Department since 2008. Her leadership is already enriching the College, as you'll see in this issue.
In this summer issue of HHD News Now we introduce you to some of our exemplary graduating students, and faculty research projects that span from a new course that teaches students to counter the pollution of fast-fashion, to ways innovative technology creates safe-spaces for students entering the medical field. You'll learn about student COVID contact tracers, and see performances and productions by students studying dance and fashion.
As always, we thank you for your engagement and involvement with us. We appreciate your support! Your involvement helps our students and alumni enhance, enrich, and empower the human experience.

HHD Stories Come to Life: Wanderlust Creamery
CSUN Alumni Adrienne Borlongan ('09, Family and Consumer Sciences) and Jon-Patrick "JP" Lopez ('08, Business Law) are the co-founders of Wanderlust Creamery ice cream shops. The couple now owns several shops in Southern California.
Their inventive, artisanal flavors have fueled phenomenal growth. Their story was featured in CSUN Today in February, 2020, just ahead of the pandemic. We followed up with them recently to find out what has happened with the business since then (it's grown---a lot).

Spotlight on Women's History Month: Meet Our Faculty Experts
There are more than 1,000 remarkable women faculty at CSUN — far more than one could ever encounter during one’s studies or career at the University. In honor of Women’s History Month last March, CSUN Today featured a few who stand out in their fields. Their specialties are gender equity, travel and tourism, public health, and engineering.
Three of the four represented disciplines are from HHD. CSUN Today talked to these faculty about their research, how things have changed in their classrooms (or not) in terms of female representation, as well as their thoughts on empowering women.

Kinesis: Dance Concert Returns Live in 2022
Dancers and choreographers from the Kinesiology/Dance program returned to live performance this year for Kinesis: Emerging Choreography, after two-plus years of limited interaction due to the pandemic. The department celebrated this opportunity to share these new works created by our talented undergraduate dance students. "Having an audience present for this performance is exciting in ways that cannot be explained," said faculty program and show director Paula Thomson. Kinesiology faculty Terry Sweeting was honored at the event.

Smoke and Mirrors: Fashion Illusion was the title of the 43rd annual CSUN TRENDS Student Fashion Show. Our Apparel Design and Merchandising students, as they have for each of the prior 42 showcases, have again done us proud. The title certainly alludes to the mystique that is innate to the art and artistry of fashion design. However, what is very real is the substantial amount of work that our students have put into creating their collections, designing the clothing, scenes, and even the runway to show off their work, as well as publishing this year’s TRENDS fashion magazine. As Contact Tracers, Health Sciences Students Track COVID-19: Since the start of the pandemic, contact tracing has played a critical role in slowing the spread of the virus. Early on, in March 2020, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health turned to CSUN students for help, offering them internships as contact tracers. Read More About the Students' Work >
2022 Dodgers/Campanella Scholars Celebrated: For the past 12 years, the Roy and Roxy Campanella and Los Angeles Dodgers Foundations have teamed up to grant financial assistance to CSUN physical therapy students who show the will to advance in the same field that helped Dodger Roy Campanella overcome amazing odds. In February, ten scholarship recpients shared their heartfelt stories and appreciation. Read About the Campanella Scholars >
Scholarships Replace Obstacles with Open Horizons. Some students would have to turn away from the chance for a University degree were it not for scholarship donations, large and small. The College of Health and Human Development is proud of our 2021-22 scholarship recipients across the College, and grateful to our benefactors for every gift, at every amount.
