FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

Dear Campus Community,

Last year, a cross-divisional team of faculty and staff began the extensive process of assembling the materials required for CSUN’s application for the prestigious Seal of Excelencia – the only national certification that recognizes institutions of higher learning that are serving Latinx students with intentionality based on student success outcomes and data.

I am delighted to share that Excelencia in Education announced that we are one of only nine institutions across the country to earn this certification in 2023. This marks the first time CSUN has earned this Seal, and is a direct reflection of the extraordinary dedication of our faculty and staff to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and justice.

I would like to thank Dr. Amanda Quintero, Senior Advisor to the President for Inclusive Excellence, for her invaluable expertise and for overseeing this endeavor, as well as Drs. Melanie Bocanegra, Freddie Sanchez and Kandace Harris who led the cross-divisional committee including Dustin Tamashiro, Kristina de la Vega, Dr. Matt Cahn, Juana Maria Valdivia and Shelline Warren, with support from Veronica Montoya, in assembling the extensive application.

This recognition affirms that we are on the right path–the path of authentically serving our Latinx students while serving all of our students–by enabling their journey to a life forever transformed by a college degree. It also affirms that we are making demonstrable progress in advancing our shared vision for the future as outlined in CSUN’s Road Map, while acknowledging the significant work that remains in eliminating equity gaps for all of our students.

This is a moment of celebration and I am so grateful to serve alongside each of you as we continue to advance a brighter and more equitable future for us all.

Sincerely,

ERIKA D. BECK, PH.D.
President
